I refer to them as the Scarlet Twins to avoid corrupting my delicate self with any western influences. If I need to do either one in particular I just say the older or the younger and cut down anyone who needs further elaboration with my katana folded 1000 times to replicate true Japanese craftsmanship.

Half the time I'm not even sure which one is the surname since anime subs switch it a bunch so I just kind of pick the order randomly.

it's all rivers, mountains, valleys, fields, forests, etc
like seeing someone called "greenwood" or "blackwell", you immediately know that's not their first name

Someone watching with English subtitles aren't gonna be able to tell these apart because the names aren't translated, just romanized. Of course it is easier to separate if you can read the kanji, but then you you're not using the random english subtitles in the first place so it's not an issue.

I'd think it's for the same reason you almost never hear Westerners pronounce Japanese names correctly and with rolled Rs - they aren't used to it.

I can't say it bothers me at all. I'd even say I don't even pay attention to it. I can't even remember the names of something like 98% of anime characters as they're just "blue hair girl" or "the one with the pink dress".
It's a bit different with video game characters, but even then they're mostly just referred to with one name so it doesn't matter. People don't say "my favorite character is Alice Margatroid", they say "I like Alice".

There's an inverse relationship to understanding a name and thinking it sounds cool. Names tend to be descriptive and plain and boring, they're only cool if they're foreign. People are usually named after objects, professions or their parents. Not very exciting unless the pronunciation is alien to you.

I think this is somewhat undervaluing the choice of a name when it comes to characters. People will spend a significant amount of time on finding the right symbolism or meaning to attach to a character through the name, even if sometimes it’s something very simple like naming your black haired character 黒. Well, in that case it’s probably not so much a case of having to think hard…

Either order can be fine I guess. But I prefer the Japanese order when watching anime because I want what's subtitled to match what I'm hearing.

Rolling the R/Ls is really difficult for a gaijin of any background. Maybe not people that natively speak spanish I guess. When I took Japanese as a second language out teacher spent weeks on the rolling the L/R thing. Took me ages to get it acceptable to her even though I knew I was still awful at it due to my native accent.

This is mostly due to CR doing it one way and the few fansubbers around doing it the other way I think. Plus most "fansubbers" these days typically start with a CR script for seasonals or a really old script for old stuff. Then add in the fact that a lot of them want to overly westernize things while the other ones want to be overly literal. It's like common sense translations have vanished. There is a healthy balance between the two but modern releases seem to go to one extreme or another on this and it's super annoying.

I don't have to rely on subtitles for most things these days. I'm out of practice so sometimes I do need to fall back for some shows (but I try to use that as practice and learning new kanji and such). What's annoying about it is wanting to share a show with someone that doesn't know the language but also doesn't like dubs. I hate sharing a good show with them if the subtitles are done badly. Both TL wise but also with things like bad timing or spamming way too much crap on screen which causes you to pause all of the time to know wtf is happening or seeing jokes in backgrounds.

Paniponi is one such show that comes to mind with this problem in every release I see. The DVD actually attempted to do a really good job. But all the modern releases of it on public/private trackers have just copy/pasted their script without bothering to convert the subtitles to .ass or to attempt to do some basic type setting. I know it's a lot of work but you'd think someone would have come along by now and done that since it's such a popular show. Those releases typically don't include the companion booklet of TL notes either.

Then there are other shows like Alien 9 where the subtitles are straight horrible in every way. Really basic stuff is done poorly like the timing, fonts, TL and no typesetting. I don't have time to fix it myself. I don't even think there is a good release that isn't the straight DVD rip. At least I think I had to grab that whenever I added it to my media server when I wanted to watch it again.
