https://mega.nz/folder/zWpHkQLT#5HSNvspwsF2vsCBi0w-ZVQ>>>/amv/9107>>>/amv/9110>>>/amv/8763This may be a bit much to go over in the game thread itself, so maybe just a preliminary Terraria server thread would be good for going over everything out there, general discussion of the game and such. I'll probably post the address and set up for the server itself when I've got everything ready and decided on. Depending on how fast we can get a list of things to add agreed upon, I may even start it up come this weekend.
It's been since the Labor of Love update being added that I last played any vanilla terraria, and then even more time since I played the game modded. So with the game seemingly all finished with its own updates and the mod loader up to date with the current version (and having been so for a good while now it seems), I was wondering what's the current definitive Vanilla+ experience one can make with the current mod selection? I know for sure I want to have these two included:
https://terrariamods.wiki.gg/wiki/Gensokyohttps://terrariamods.wiki.gg/wiki/Touhou_Little_FriendBut aside from that I'm not too familiar with how the rest of the overhaul mods work to say if they'd make the items and such from the Touhou mod completely obsolete. This is coming from the perspective of having played Calamity and that making things just completely absurd post-Moon Lord. Thorium and Redemption (
https://thoriummod.wiki.gg/ and
https://modofredemption.wiki.gg/) from what I've seen seem to be somewhat in line with the base game, but still I'd want to know what people think about them in terms of making other mods obsolete since there's always the potential for an overhaul mod to overhaul the base power of vanilla items to something absurd. Aside from that I was looking into getting the general Terraria Overhaul mod which is:
https://forums.terraria.org/index.php?threads/terraria-overhaul-gameplay-enhancements-and-much-more.60369/And like many of the others, I haven't tried it out myself but read many praises of it from searching through discussion and such. I know for a fact that there's also a bunch of small miscellaneous mods that I'm missing from this list too that I'd add to an inevitable server so if people want to then you can go crazy.
No.158553
>>158552Personally I find a lot of the overhaul mods pretty overwhelming, I'd still probably join even if we had them though
Perhaps the smartest thing to do is play the game vanilla (with the exception of the 2hu mods) as to not alienate people not experienced with terraria and if there's still a thirst to keep playing after beating moon lord, we switch to thorium or calamity or whatever (maybe use a poll when the time comes)
I know that these mods don't solely add post moon lord content but we can just start a fresh world if that's a concern
No.158554
>>158553The bigger concern for me than overwhelming people early is the age old problem with Terraria being the power gamers vs the casuals. That’s why I want an overhaul mod to make progression far, far harder to barrel through. In fact I’m considering using the For the Worthy seed to make the difficulty Legendary mode because historically people are extremely proficient at playing and there’s always complaints about how nobody is ready for hardmode by the time it comes. We even tried mediumcore master mode last time and it went exactly the same way with the wall of flesh being downed a day or two after the server went up.
No.158555
>>158554people just need to not be so slow
No.158556
>>158554Well you're not going to bridge that gap by making things more difficult and punishing for everyone
Though I suppose if you make the server medium core legendary mode cock torture you'll probably only attract experienced players, so at that point use whatever modpack you want
The ideal solution would be the experienced players chilling out and just building dicks in the sky or something for the first few days, but obviously trying to police people would be retarded
No.158557
>>158554It's not so much power gamer vs. casual as it's playstyle. There are builders and there are fighters. Fighters exhaust the content in a couple days while builders spend weeks, well, building. Unfortunately Terraria is built in a way that fighters change the world around them, causing bases to be invaded by stronger enemies and of course the infamous hardmode activation. Terraria just doesn't support different types of players at the same time.
No.158558
>>158557Oh, and I mean preference here. Obviously 'fighters' have to build stuff and 'builders' also enjoy exploring and fighting stuff, there's just a major difference in the pace of things.
No.158559
>>158556Mmm, yeah you’re right. Legendary would probably screw with the builders even more than hardmode would given all the fuckery that goes on. But I really,
really hated mediumcore shenanigans because it made sorting hell on earth. And I think that drove off more people come hardmode than anything. So you may be right that it’s counterintuitive towards casuals to tune the game up to unplayably hard. Probably will just do master mode again with softcore and really up the respawn times so we can’t wormhole abuse bosses to death. Although I would like something that slows down progression a bit, or at least really lengthens it out in a fun way. Did a test run a couple days ago and I’m already rocking full beetle armor with a terra blade so I’m way too fast.
No.158560
>>158559What I really want I think is something that makes ore progression meaningful since the usual routine is mine enough ore for a pickaxe and then upgrade, repeat until you’re mining the highest available ore and then you just farm that out until you’re fully geared out in it.
No.158561
>>158559The thing I was looking at last time we did this was locking depth and unlock it progressively with admin tools. Week 1 you can only dig to X depth, Week 2 you can dig deeper, and so on. Or maybe you could lock tool creation.
I think the end result would be that most people would become disinterested and only building-focused people would remain at which point the restrictions wouldn't be needed in the first place.
No.158562
>>158561This does sound like a terrible idea to me. I’d probably hate it. I guess the solution is just build better so you don’t get destroyed by hardmode.
No.158564
Although, I guess I can post the FTW seed info and see if it interests anyone. I think it’d be neat to try out, but I’m a power gamer and can breeze through expert and make my way through master. The one thing I’m absolutely committed to in this server is making it softcore, because hardcore is obviously not going to work and mediumcore is too much of a pain.

>>158568>What you want is an overhaul of the entire mining system themProbably, I don't want to do something as drastic and unfun as
>>158561 suggested, but I want something that gives a bit more purpose to those early ores instead of having them be just a block that becomes no more than a nuisance to carry around as soon as you've made its pick (aside from iron/lead to make tracks).
No.158572
>>158569>Not sure if you considered this and decided against itI did decide against it. There's extra challenge, and then there's cock and ball torture like that seed. If we were going to be playing with experienced people only, I'd consider it if we were all on board. But that seed just makes casually cruising through the game or even existing in it a living hell.
>You should check if the mods are compatible with For the Worthy.I'll check that out too.
No.158581
I usually find the combination of the Touhou mods with Thorium to be really fun. Obviously you should have the various QoL mods like Magic Storage and Recipe Browser etc. Mods like Ore Excavator or any sort of veinminer would maybe be nice to have but I always thought those were really cheatsy. However if Calamity is somehow decided on I probably won't play as it quite frankly in my opinion ruins the flow of the game as well as many many other mods. It's a very quantity over quality mod and I really don't understand why so many people like it so much.
No.158582
>>158554Why not just restrict the server to being up only on certain days? When Terraria was hosted on 4/jp/ a few years ago the server host would only put it up for a certain amount of time on the weekend days. Like say about 8 hours a day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
No.158584
I would be up for playing on the terraria server. I'm one of the builder/noodling around types and progression on servers always goes too fast for it to be fun for me...
No.158586
>>158554Of course this is always going to be an issue, but one thing to consider is that we're all adults here
I hope and can hold ourselves to some level of sportsmanship. I know SOME people get carried away and go a bit hardcore, but I like to think we have the capacity to take it easy~. Another thing that
>>158575 and
>>158582 brings up is having planned days for it. Puts more players together at once and cuts out the possibility of one or two people finishing the whole game while the rest are offline; that might still happen but at least most people would be a participant of it.
The way I see it is that it's a social game, not a competition.
>>158581>I really don't understand why so many people like it so much.I think because they're chasing that high point a few notable bosses give that people rave on about.
No.158594
>>158581>However if Calamity is somehow decided on I probably won't playYou won't have to worry about that, I've already decided something like Calamity will be blacklisted. One, because of what you said. And two, because it completely overpowers and ruins the Touhou mod. If you say that Thorium and Touhou work well then that should be a good combination I'll try out.
As for other supposed huge expansion mods that I believe I've discarded: Homeward Journey seemed a good fit for its post-moonlord content, but I don't know what the early game buffs and progression are like. The problem is some of these endgame weapons are simply broken beyond belief so it turns me off of it. If they're very hard to unlock then maybe that'd be fine since it also gates the Zenith behind a couple of them and it can be a sort of post-everything challenge, but assuming the mod progression post-moonlord is too much too fast then I think it's best I nix it. Also explored The Stars Above
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2563862309&searchtext= which looked cool and has some neat cyberpunk elements in hell, but it too had a fairly annoying powercreep problem, though nothing on the level of Homeward Journey and definitely nothing on the level of BS Calamity. However, some of the descriptions are so ludicrously long I was considering dropping it based solely on that. Then probably the biggest mark against it was that it seems heavily story driven which probably wouldn't work out as well in MP. Seriously, just look at this. I really want something more midranged and which mixes well with Vanilla and these two at the moment seem completely broken and may make the game too simple.
I considered Exxo Avalon as well, and could change my mind on it since it doesn't seem nearly as egregious balance-wise like the other two, but it did fairly outclass the Touhou stuff by a fair margin unlike the other two mods I think I'm pretty much settled on in terms of balance. Also I was worried that the worldgen for it would conflict with them too so I disabled it and genned a new world, but it doesn't seem like it was an issue. The big ones I'm absolutely settled on for now are Thorium and Spirits, and Terraria Overhaul but I'll touch on that one later. Thorium gets to about the same level as the Touhou mod does in its endgame and so their gear is pretty balanced and can be interchanged with one another. Spirits seems like it doesn't get anywhere near endgame levels comparable to the other two, or even Vanilla Terraria so there's no conflict there. What it does do, however, is make some nice changes and additions to the pre-hardmode phase of the game and some extra bosses in hardmode which are pretty nice. Combined with the potential it should have for accessories and other gear and I think it'll work just fine with everything else. The fun part of all of this is that I tested the "For the Worthy" seed like
>>158568 said too, and everything seemingly still generated fine. So we can still play on Legendary difficulty and get our asses kicked while we try to progress and the builders build.
For the builders, I was considering this mod, but don't know if it's going to be too OP or not and I don't see anything about privileges so it may not be good if it allows anyone to enable anything. Though if anyone knows any good QoL for the builders I'd be happy to try and get them.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2797518634&searchtext=In a similar vein the Terraria Overhaul seems like quite the intensive mod and should provide people with a lot to tweak and such, but while it doesn't seem to have the same OP features like the prior one I wonder if there's anything that may need to be adjusted for it.

There are several ways to become admin. The easiest way is to be the first user to register with HEROs Mod. The next way is to access the server console and use the auth code in game. >>159104The last terraria server hosted here was fairly small, so we didn't have as much need for fishing like we do now. I actually like it quite a bit more than I thought I would, automating it the last time is probably what made me associate it with busywork. But now getting all the potions and setup to fish the crates and the little dopamine hit when I actually hit one is really nice.
Also would this be a useful mod to have?

No.159725
>>159719Yeah, I should probably make the plans for the server far in advance next time. Also the next time I need to figure out what was causing all the lag for people and then find a fix so the experience is more smooth all-around. Not really sure how to fix that however, aside from just renting out a server that'll have better ping all around than my house to others. Though if the issue's linked to individual PC performance then there's probably nothing I can do aside from hope Re-Logic rewrites the game engine to not tie so much to FPS. But I think right now people may be a little fatigued because even if it was 4 weeks it was still 12 hours or more a day for 3 days straight for everyone. Which is a bit over a full week's worth of playtime in total.
Was talking with some others about what I'll do for the next host, and despite some earlier reservations in the thread I think that I'd be down for playing Calamity with our other mods. Having looked more into it, it really does seem like a straight upgrade over normal Terraria in terms of progression reworks and some neat little skips you can do. Though the skips would probably be a bit more difficult to pull off in MP with scaling difficulty and also people not wanting to blaze through content and experience the game in its intended progression to some extent. Not myself though, I love stuff like original pick power Reaver Shark and dungeon guardian spawn prevention methods to allow for getting a bunch of OP for your point armor and weapons early. Then with some recent videos I thought that killing Lunatic Cultist as the first boss through some skips on Calamity Infernum looked awesome and I'm sure people would absolutely hate doing that. I look for the same types of sequence breaks in all games I play because it's neat to play the non-intended way for me but I know that others don't necessarily appreciate that so I digress. Everything else around it like the updated mechanics for boss fights and total revamp of various systems to make the game as a whole more enjoyable seem like big plusses to me.
Aside from that, I'm looking forwards to Kyora when it releases too. Server's up and has been up, I'll be on in a bit because I need to do some necessary stuff, don't forget that we'll be taking the final pictures if you want to come around 17:00 EST so in ~5 hoursish!
No.159726
>>159723that's some crazy survivability... how does the terrarian's last knife differ from the zenith that made you prefer using it instead?
No.159727
>>159725Looking forward to the pics!
>>159726I used the knife specifically for The Primordials because they have 33% damage resistance to Zenith, and their final form has even more (50% resistance). Zenith is definitely a better weapon. The knife can't even beat Zenith in single target DPS (assuming you're pointing your cursor exactly at your character's sprite while using it).

Good to see people designing and building things!
>>159719What are you envisioning exactly? I thought it would be cool to have a 'builder' server that hangs around for a couple months, but I'm not sure how that would work. Do people reserve a plot of land or something?
No.159748
>>159747It was just an offhanded comment about time flying, didn't mean anything by it.
I know there are server settings in minecraft where you can reserve plots of land and such, so there are probably similar things for terraria too. Collaborative stuff is fun though so I'm not so sure about individual plots...

>>159725if there's gonna be a terraria session in the future, could it be that didn't include overhaul mod, i think is the reason for the fps drops
No.159760

No.159767
Power went out while I was in the middle of building... it must be fate™ I guess.

No.159770
>>159767You're welcome.
Also, I was convinced in the server to just leave it up for the foreseeable future while I'm away for builders to build their hearts out and I don't mind the idea at all, especially given the Hakurei Shrine that was built over the course of this night.
So for while I'm out in Japan the server will stay on, which could be upwards of 11 days! The one caveat is that if anything happens to the server I can't turn it back on, so enjoy it with the idea that any second could be its last.
No.159776
>>159756The overhaul mod has some nice features, but it also has a lot of offputting effects who's settings are tucked in its own special snowflake mod menu that people need to tell you about to turn things off.
Music filtering when low health or dead, bloodstains, camera motions, and the god awful screenshake. Significantly more enjoyable when I got those disabled.

>>160344Can a Terrarianon explain the sand thing? Is this some kind of mild griefing that is more likely to be seen as fun, like chewing on your mic in online shooters?
No.160387
>>160386So there's a weapon in the game called the Sand gun which is actually a pretty good weapon when you get it, the issue with it is that it uses sand as ammo so you need to mine a lot of desert to use it and every shot you miss with the sand gun creates a sand block where it lands, this is really annoying during boss fights as we bump into it/ it blocks our projectiles
So the sand fiend both deleted the entire desert and made the bosses harder for everyone else
