I do not like the colors or the lack of expressions of the new Holo. I grabbed this pic from a shitpost thread on /a/ (that I noticed while scrolling the catalog for manga threads, don't judge me). It does showcase her being less expressive. Her hair color also tends closer to blonde instead of red which is a big miss in my opinion. The reddish brown hair color symbolizes Holo's personality very well. A faint sub-blonde color doesn't.

Eh. I think it's just nostalgia that's clouding people's vision. If you watch the anime again, pay attention to Holo's height. It's all over the place. In the OP and in early episodes, Holo is only just barely taller than Lawrence's waist, and at other times she's only a head shorter. Inconsistent depictions is on-brand for Spice and Wolf.

File:[Okay-Subs] Astro Note - 0….jpg (417.37 KB,1920x1080)

Astro Note seems kinda... hmm. It's listed as romcom so that will turn off a lot of people here, but don't know about myself. I like its style and it has a good cast of characters, but somehow it just didn't click for me. If you're one of those food porn people (which seems to be everyone in Japan) then that part would appeal to you I guess. There was a huge teaser/reveal at the end of the first episode, but I don't think it will change things much. It's an anime original, so that's cool!
I really don't know why I can't say I'm a huge fan of it because nothing seems bad about it. I can say for sure that the poor showing of RomComs in seasonal stream means that this doesn't have a chance, though. (but they should)

I forgot to say that I'll keep watching more episodes so that's kind of an endorsement of sorts I think? I think it has potential.
Also if you're going to download to try it (which you should) apparently there's some problem with how it was done and mtbb has an upload available on nyaa:

Crunchyroll’s video (and the video of other foreign distributors, like Baha) is missing a field. That means that the image is basically 1920x540. This encode doesn’t restore the missing information, but it at least fixes the aliasing caused by the missing field. Thank you to zewia for identifying the problem. I will keep making these encodes every week until the publisher fixes the issue.

 No.122684

I would assume that it's in CR's (and other <foreign distributors'>) own interests to get this fixed, so messaging them and telling them about the problem should mean that they will appeal to the studio to please send them the correct files.

Train show has an interesting premise and I'm curious to see how it plays out, but I feel like the animation on the animals was lackluster. I guess they're focused on other parts of the show, which is fine, but still I don't like seeing it in the very first episode. Lots of talking. Good soundtrack and some nice visuals outside of what I mentioned earlier.
It kind of reminds me of Wonder Egg and it's also an original so I want to give it a chance just based on that. But will it be good? Not sure...

>It kind of reminds me of Wonder Egg
I saw other people saying this and I don't really get it. WEP was always trying to be 2d4u, which set it up to either succeed hard or fail harder. This was much more comedy-based so it doesn't have as far to fall even if it does fuck up. The comparison just seems like trainwreck chasing to me.

I like Madome. It was kind of meh at the beginning, but I quickly warmed up to it. It's a somewhat cliche premise of a guy being shocked and flustered when he sees a cute innocent girl. He he's a demon lord sorcerer that bought an elf slave girl after a 'love at first' thing. It features the dreaded R word as a tag so I don't expect it to be very popular around here. Sigh.

File:[SubsPlease] Re Monster - ….jpg (347.35 KB,1920x1080)

Re Monster had a pretty fun first episode, but the first few episodes of these isekai shows are generally the best as it falls off massively once he's no longer gaining strength rapidly and is instead fighting a big evil or other stuff that drags on. Most of these iskai shows should really only be about 3-4 episodes long.
Also, huh, it's DEEN. Interesting.

It's mostly the same regarding that. There are a few key differences in the reboot compared to the original that I noticed however (I'm also watching the original afterwards in order for the reboot to not override my memory of it):
- Chloe is replaced by a guy called "Yarei" in order to fulfill her role of pretending to be Holo in the festival (it's like that in the LN/manga too)
- The vegetation is more lush, green and vivid (this seems to be due to the original apparently taking place in Autumn. Not sure which season it is in the reboot)
- The couple at the beginning of ep 2 is younger
- Holo doesn't shake her tail to dry herself (a real shame, I loved that scene)
- There isn't a rainbow over the church
And also minor nitpicking stuff like Holo doing the whiskers with her fingers instead of 'drawing' them in the air: >>122457 I do still stand by what I said here though. There was no need to change her design that much.

It immediately strikes you with some 3D which it uses a lot of but decently, but the 2D they're certainly not skimping on. I only watched a couple episodes of the restaurant isekai one and it was heavily focused on food and the restaurant itself. They did have a hamburger episode which I think was 2 or 3, so that's worth something. Dungeon Meshi really stands above it for various reasons, but if you're one of those people that love seeing characters eat and talk about eating then restaurant isekai could fill those needs (alongside 50,000 other shows)

File:solo leveling long panels.png (6.43 MB,1313x6897)

Anonymous posted about manwha it in the blog thread and I'll move a step up from that by moving to here. They were quoting this article:
https://screenrant.com/solo-leveling-documentary-manhwa-overtake-manga/
The pro-manwha argument boils down to this: manwha is better suited to phones, phones are everywhere, therefore it's easier for growth to be had.

The problems that come with it the writer admits in their second paragraph:
>Some of the best aspects of manga like double-page spreads, and unique paneling do not always translate well to a vertical scroll format like that of manhwa.
Then immediately contradicts it in the next part:
>That said, manhwa's vertical scrolling style does not sacrifice any of the advantages offered by manga's unique paneling. Similar to manga, vertical scrolling can also control the pacing, tension, time, and flow of the story being told.
This isn't true, he's obviously bullshitting. Especially because of this other idea quoting from a head honcho:
>The very act of scrolling to read gives it a kind of feeling of movement, such as the movement of a gave or flow of time.
If you don't like them you'll say it's dumb from the get-go but even if you're a supporter I'm certain it's more of a novelty than anything. Good manga convey this flow through their paneling, that's basic stuff, Mr. Bum Gang is essentially celebrating the fact that webtoons have pidgeonholed themselves into a single panel structure. Solo Leveling manages to have wide shots of battlefields by tilting its panels in a way that is honestly rather interesting (pictured: chapters 165 and 135 respectively), but these are things that would be typically be achieved via a spread which is infinitely more workable and readable not only as a book but with a tablet or PC. Even on mobile the way it asks you to tilt your head is wonky. And if a manhwa wants to, for example, show a group of people in any setting like a room, it often has to cut what would otherwise be a single image in half then put the two disconnected panels one below the other and this does happen very many times. The amount of versatility it loses is greater that it seems at first.

But the real kicker is that if you look at the paperback here, you'll see it's essentially an adaptation:
https://www.etsy.com/listing/983740354/solo-leveling-i-alone-level-up-full-set
Why? Because suddenly you have to refactor this single loooong strip into a book and that requires rearranging its panels into the traditional configuration since that's the way that makes sense for anything that isn't a phone. And paperbacks are how you make money, not webtoons, so you're banking on people purchasing an inferior product as your method of income unless you're planning out both formats in tandem and then that demands extra work from everyone involved when at first I'm not sure there's even a guarantee it'll sell whereas a manga comes bundled in magazines getting at least somewhat of a headstart from that. These divergences are non-trivial in both the short and long term, putting aside that Korea doesn't have anywhere the level of refinement Japan's culture industry has evidenced by the fact its animation is Japanese-made.
Finally, I'd disagree with >>123094 because the article states these chapters are pre-made as a whole and then distributed in batches, circumventing the usual problem of burning out from a constant schedule. The one truly interesting comment from the article is that apparently they're including sound effects and animation too, which makes me think they're gonna be going down the Homestuck route funnily enough. Evolutionary convergence and alla dat jazz, though again gimped.

I can't see how that principle wouldn't apply to any sort of non-realist fiction.

There's a saying in software engineering
> Fail fast fail often
The more rough and rapid pace of manga means that ideas can get cancelled much easier and there's a greater emphasis on presenting things as interestingly as possible on as little a budget.
The inherent problem with the coloring approach where they write up the entire story then release it weak by week, is they have to do market analysis ahead of time to determin what is good or ornot. This encourages only the safe decisions to be made while shonen jump can take more risks and cut an author if he isn't up to par with what people are feeling right now

 No.123123

Well, in SL's case the source is a web novel and the story is already written so that's not a problem. That's also true for others I've seen recommended like The Greatest Estate Developer, Return of the Mount Hua Sect, or Omniscient Reader. On top of that, I doubt most manga are actually that reactive when they don't have the obligation to keep going as it happens with the giants, though it's not something I can say I've looked into.

as much as I think the Death Note team is a bunch of hacks and this story is F tier, in terms of giving a purely monitary look at how the manga industry works, I believe it's pretty believable https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bakuman and a large part of it is that there's a lot of reactivity and that people can settle into established tropes, but it can be soul crushing if they don't enjoy it.

> WN vs manga
I'm not sure how different that is from manga as well, but for people who try to get spots in serializations I believe it's a matter of submitting one shots to industry's and building an internal reputation as a reliable author

Not a fan of manhwa, but I don't see why they don't just print vertical books. It would be easy to create a book that's 10cm on the x axis and 30cm on the y axis, and has its back at the top.
It would not be easy to store this book alongside traditional books, but if you're a manhwa fan and buy lots of them, that's not an issue.

Once the artist knows to split panels aftre every x pixels to account for pages, you can have your cake and eat it too.

We've talked about the artstyle/design changes in Spice and Wolf, but what about Yuru Camp? What does /qa/ think of the new artstyle/designs of the new season? I'm pretty sure I can see a bit of 3D in here, but it's not at all extremely standout or an eyesore. If it is CG then non-toei/orange studios are really making strides into perfecting the mixing of the two. >Tsutomu Mizushima, director of the new original anime “Train to the End of the World (Shuumatsu Train Doko and Iku?)” produced by EMT Squared studios and released this week.
>Although initial impressions have been positive, it was director Tsutomu Mizushima who threw the bucket of cold water on Twitter, revealing that they haven't even finished the fourth episode yet. While it is normal within the anime industry for episodes to be finished a few hours (or sometimes even minutes) before they air on television, generally the only thing missing are small production details.
>However, the words used by the director in question have made it clear that it is not “small details” that are missing:
>The fourth episode is not ready yet. Is it okay for me to post on Twitter about this? Don't know. Please continue to support us over the next three months, even if it seems like a short time

I won't be watching episode 4 until Saturday, but 3 was great and if there's really a decline then I guess he was entirely truthful and worried.

Then I ended up watching the old OVAs and it reminded me why I kinda hated the old slime before Rimuru became a Demon Lord, and it's how odd everything feels. There's a distinct lack of maturity and misalignment of actions/consequences and what's shown on screen. It never really felt like anything mattered much either and was just happening because it advanced the story, I guess in short it lacked purpose. Like with this scene where the kids are ambushed by some thieves inhabiting the cave they were meant to train in and get into a fight. It's treated as more of a joke encounter where the villains are beaten up and arrested but at one point the bandit leader slashes one of the kids across the stomache drawing blood. You'd think this would be a serious event but he's just healed up quickly and it's also passed off as part of the joke.... It just feels off.

Actually why is Slime so insanely popular in the first place? IT doesn't really do anything different or exceptionally well. It's not even really the most well animated of the bunch. It just kinda exists as a likeable product.

think of it like the replacement to "Fairy Tail" in the age-demographic

I guess that kinda makes sense. All the other isekai either target teens or adults or are extremely turd-like.

>>123728
i wouldn't say that any isekai other than the older ones target a more mature demographic. Most of them are very childlike

 No.123732

>>123731
yeah very childlike but usually in a more teeny way
slime's kinda really tame in comparison

 No.123733

like usually other isekai are ripe with irony or meta jokes or edge

Isn't salad bowl's OP similar to tatami galaxy...

 No.123751

>>123724
I think it actually targets an older demographic. Its appeal is in how it delves into the organizational aspect of things.
>>123731
Then you would be very wrong, unless you use "mature" just as an insult against adults who like isekai.

Astro Note is really fun! >>>/poll/4076 seems to be right and it's getting a bit crazier as the mp4 I posted in >>123800 kind of hints at. It's still quite restrained, but the groundwork is there. The wild stuff is good, but the regular human interaction between fun characters is the highlight to me.
I think people will regret watching this 'live' if they miss out on it.

Love the tenshi anime
cant believe it will end in just eight episodes.......

I've been thinking about it more and I think salad bowl was inspired a lot by the director style of Yuasa who did Eizouken, Mind Game, Tatami galaxy etc.

I only really see similarities between the OPs. It sounds somewhat similar and uses real life imagery like the Tatami Galaxy OP.

Hmm I'll give you my opinion in a couple days when I watch the latest episode. That's unfortunate if it's true, although it's not really a spectacular looking show to begin with (but still fantastic)
