I kinda wonder, how do people discover new music today? There's such a vast expanse of stuff out there and most all of it is hidden in its own corner of the internet. If you know what you're searching for maybe it's easier, but finding completely new stuff that appeals to you seems like an extremely tough endeavor. Are there any good methods /qa/ knows of or is word of mouth the best way still?

I go on last.fm and search by genre and through that if possible look up what artists inspired the artist I liked and repeat the cycle. It's also possible to do this by looking at compilation albums on Discogs via the same means as you do with last.fm.
Another way is to dig through all of Bandcamp. One could also see what bands opened for popular ones at concerts but I've never tried that method and don't know if that would be hard or not. Lastly you could visit your local Music CD store and look in the local releases bin if they have one.

Doujin music sites and Youtube. Phoenix kappashiro, Elegant Sister and SkuddeOuo are good channels to find music on.

I've finished searching for new music. When I watch a new anime I'll get its OST, but that's it.

Sadly, I think there isn't a way. All the methods mentioned are limited by the scope and genre of the places have and the specific ranges you search for.
Searching by genres requires you know the genre in the first place. You local music stores are limited by local cultures. Listen to radio/use lists made by someone limits you to one person's taste.
The only place I know that could contain everything imaginable is YouTube and its algorithm makes it as hard as possible for you to discover unrelated things.

probaly because there is so much
imagin if you could put all unique tracks in the world into a shuffle playlist, for how long would you need to press skip until you get something you like? What sometimes works is catching a good one in a game, or movie show whatever, and branching off of that.

Spotify, YouTube recommendations, last.fm, browsing the uploads of Soulseek users...

I'm someone that's been listening to almost exclusively video game music for the past 20 years and I really have no idea how to find new music with bands and such. it seems like most people just stop looking once they reach a certain age.
About 10 years ago I used Pandora and found some nice music, but it never substantial and there were a lot of repeats so I stopped after a couple weeks. That's how I found that MGMT band that I liked.
I just listen to video game music and very rarely sometimes some anime music if it's good enough, but the anime music never really stays in my mind like VGM.

What ever happened to that? I remember it being big years ago, but at the same time it's been years since I ever last heard it brought up.

I have no idea. It's just something I stopped using and maybe other people did it, too. I think other streaming methods like youtube's algorithm and autoplay might have replaced it for many people, but for me I never really made any conscious effort to stop and just stopped using it one day.

Looking at this wiki article on it, it seems like it's had mixed results with monetization and has traded hands a few times. I don't think it had ads when I listened to it, but I'm not entirely sure. (or maybe I had them blocked)

YouTube onto a song in incognito mode. With an account, the recommendations are garbage and unhelpful, but in incognito it shows related content by default.

Same. I used to actively search for music but now it just feels like a waste of time especially since 99% of stuff I find is garbage. Now its mostly anime OPs or vidya osts. Every now and then youtube will rec me something nice though like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9sBd0QR1_Q

 No.108106

These days it's really just via anime OPs and EDs, if I REALLY like a particular song I might branch into the artist's other works. Other than that, Denpa I discovered through 4/jp/'s threads a while ago, and anything else typically comes from r/a/dio, particularly during the new years streams.
I really lucked out when I discovered Ar Tonelico thanks to the streams, I got so obsessed with the music I even downloaded the games and and am currently finishing up the third one. I've basically listened to nothing except Ar Tonelico music for the past two months now.

If you have time, listen to the first few songs. The music is so good that this three hour compilation doesn't even contain all of the music with vocals, and pretty much all of the vocal songs are god tier

Finally decided to invest into a spotify account and it's been pretty good at automatically generating playlists that contain songs I might like. Guess that's how people find new music these days.

i think most of the new stuff i've discovered has been from youtube's recommendations. yt usually works fine for me. if not that, then word of mouth from people online. it's also always nice to be introduced to a band through an anime or game OP.

For me, I use Spotify or Discogs.

If you have the name of the label for the songs you currently play, you can look it up to find every other release that's on that label.

For spotify users, you can type label:LabelName and find nearly every release for that label.

You also look up the label on Discogs and find releases there.

I would, there is a lot more variation in that than any other genre.

 No.123209

I barely find new music at all. It's not really a problem, since my music collection is actually of a fairly decent size. Sometimes I open the 4/a/ sound thread. There's a regular there who has a similar taste to mine.
Things like stumbling over Yuve Yuve Yu in the youtube recommendations does not really happen normally. It could be called a freak accident, that.

¥getting into genres
Very easy. Just search for playlists of a certain genre you want to get into on youtube. Someone talked about vocaloid shoegaze some days ago and I could easily find a playlist with almost 300 songs just now.
¥finding individual songs within a genre
This is probably the best way to do it: >>107751

Other than that, various sites like discogs, soundcloud, last.fm, etc.
