 No.101517[Last50 Posts]

Which series will win Winter 2022?

File:Mine.png (7.91 MB,1680x6923)

Akebi didn't make the cut.

4 are confirmed
12 have to be tried
The rest are not notable

Im so overwhelmed by seasonals. I'm still working on fall. I think I'll put most in the backlog and really try this season though!

I don't think there will be much on the Winter season, but things could pop out.

I might opt for some movies from previous seasons

File:[SubsPlease] Akebi-chan no….jpg (173.72 KB,1280x720)

Yeah, Akebi!

going through the list actually almost brought me to tears...
so many of them I want to watch but I haven't even finished the fall ones that I liked, and dont even know when I will get to finishing them...
gone are the days I could have spent all morning/day watching anime...

wish all the kissuers w*rked at the same w*rkplace so we could hang out and watch anime on our l*nch breaks

as pr*fessional r*viewers

on yout*be

almost nothing i want to watch
the second nagatoro and onii-chan wa oshimai are pretty much it
whatever happened to nice soft desaturated gentle slice of life with backgrounds painted in watercolour

List seemed like a bore to me.
What's attractive?

File:[HorribleSubs] Kono Subara….jpg (80.82 KB,696x720)

Bisque Doll, Akebi, and Kuruoitsu-san. Nothing else is worth watching.

Ooyukiumi no Kaina will probably be enjoyable as long as you're not one of those autists who gets triggered by CGI.

File:[SubsPlease] Utawarerumono….png (1008.95 KB,1280x720)

I'm sorry. I'm still in mourning over Utawarerumono being over. What... what else is there?
But seriously, I'm sure there are some great shows, but I haven't looked yet. I don't like looking until it's closer to air date. Some good sequels, at least.

I cant get over how generic of a title "the Legend of Heroes" is

All the good parts of bisque doll will be uploaded as webms.

File:[Isekai-mini] Tensei shita….jpg (854.23 KB,3840x2160)

I did a mod edit of the thread title so people can do do ctrl+f '2023' to find thread or whatever

File:[Inu] Kyokou Suiri - 02 [C….jpg (103.81 KB,1280x720)

Well, stuff is going to be starting shortly. I'm starting to look at them and I'm a bit underwhelmed aside from sequels. The normal deluge of isekai, of course.

"Tough guy isn't so tough when dealing with a kid" genre has another entry. Seems very Spy X Family-ish.

This might be nice. Seems cute. I like this kind of thing more than the teasing stuff

This one could be good, about a guy being turned into a dog? I don't like the guy's voice very much, though. Ehh...

Tomboy romcom? Maybe. (probably not)

Worth a shot.

Maybe? Trailer wasn't amazing. Main girl reminds me of the alien girl in Teppen.

Another serious one. I was thinking "reminds me of that Mars Red show" and it's the same studio.

I had no idea those video games were getting an anime. I don't think I'd want to watch this without playing those first.

Isekai, yeah, but this girl has the ability to jump between the worlds apparently and her goal is to save up money. I like it when people can jump between worlds and influence them, so this might be something I like.

Girls doing Judo. Ehhhh... I doubt I'd like it, but listing it because it's kind of novel. It'd be better if they were cute.

Well, I think at least a couple of the ones I listed should turn out well. Even if none of this stuff turns out well there's still some major sequels/continuations:

Vinland, yeah.

Awesome chuuni show. The "did you think I'd die just because you killed me?" guy. I hope it can be as good as the first season. Pairing this with Kage will be amazing.

Revengers. Good show.

I don't like Nagatoro as much as other people, but it can be enjoyable.

Surprised and happy to see fluffy hair girl back! Really loved the style and atmosphere of the first one.

It's a 30+ year old franchise - at this point you just gotta accept it.

>I'm a bit underwhelmed aside from sequels
I'm actually relieved, these seasons have been jam-packed and it's nice to have a slower, relaxed season.

>I like this kind of thing more than the teasing stuff
Yeah, I'm looking forward to this
Aside from Takagi-chan, and they act like that because of the age of they are, most of the "teasing" series have kind of dropped that gimmick and became more romcom/SoL stuff after the first handful of chapters.

>Tomboy romcom? Maybe. (probably not)
This is one of the most anticipated anime of the year, but I remember fans of the manga being vaguely frustrated about something, but because of the popularity of the manga I will give it a shot regardless.

>Girls doing Judo. [...] It'd be better if they were cute.
I think hobby SoL depends on the interest, really.
And hey! They are cute in a 2000s way. This is another one I'm looking forward to the most.

>Vinland, yeah.
I don't know if it's gotten to that point in the anime, but didn't Vinland get editor'd?

>I don't like Nagatoro as much as other people, but it can be enjoyable.
Nagatoro is kind of in a weird spot in terms of reception. The fanbase of the original CGs didn't like how it was toned down and then the fanbase of the teasing/gentle femdom in the manga didn't care for the drama later on. I think the anime made it gain a new audience though.

I'll write more once I look through trailers and stuff. Also a weird thing to say but I really miss the widepire, wish she had a S2 already.

here's what I'm excited for

This is one I'm looking forward to at least trying just from the synopsis. It could be absurdist fun.

I'm curious what a "peaceful spinoff" of Fafner looks like.

I loved the OG Nier and have always been super curious about Automata, but have never had anything powerful to play it on.

This is a cute design and concept. Another try.

Also, I was sort of interested in the Ito Junji thing, but I both think his works cannot be adapted and also I'll pass on anything Netflix.

File:53493217_p0.jpg (558.37 KB,1000x1412)

>I'll pass on anything Netflix.
I understand hating big corporations and all, but this is just a retarded stance to take. There's absolutely no reason to completely ignore great anime like Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Devilman Crybaby, or whatever else good they may produce, just because it was funded by Netflix. They don't have any creative control and for the most part they're just throwing money at people to make what they want to make for the sole purpose of having it be something to add to the netflix catalogue.

It's not just because it's funded by Netflix, I've watched anime funded by tencent and I am not a fan of their parent organization. It's just because Netflix anime always comes like off Trigger

I would not judge anybody for ignoring Cyberpunk Edgerunners and Devilman Crybabay, I did and I never even knew they were funded by Netflix.

The debate on whether Crybaby was good or not will rage on long after the heat death of the universe

File:[SubsPlease] Ningen Fushin….jpg (402.78 KB,1920x1080)

Ningen Fuhin has potential, but I'm leaning towards it not living up to it. Four people betrayed by circumstances in life and have come to resent the world sounds like a good setup, but I'm not convinced it will be good. So far I'm not impressed by the character interactions, and the humor is more of a "meh". I'll definitely have to see episode two at least, but I'm not feeling it, which is a shame because I like the setup.

File:[SubsPlease] Tensei Oujo t….jpg (255.25 KB,1920x1080)

Tensei Ouju to Tensai Reijou no Mahou Kakumei

Well, this show started off kind of interesting in the first couple minutes, but quickly pivoted to drama and gossip and the type of political intrigue of arranged marriages and other stuff that generally doesn't appeal to me as a male.
It's isekai and yuri, too, so it had that against it (for me) so this is a pass. Oh well.

tensai riajuu

so far I have on my list:

misfit s2
bofuri s2
d4dj s2

tsundere villainess
trigun stampede

I keep putting off starting tomo-chan...

I really think I'm too old and grumpy for wacky teen romcoms

Apparently the dog show and the boy-turned-into-girl show both have/going to have uncensored versions, so I might hold out on those

the boy-turned-into-girl show already has an uncensored release

File:waterfox_xzcUP91rC9.png (949.42 KB,1276x1026)

Man, the new Vash looks so bad. Why did they do this to him? He looked so cool. It seems like this redesign is supposed to help it connect to modern teenagers since he looks like one of them, but when you bring back an IP aren't you banking on the nostalgia of the original fans? He had crazy anime/JRPG hair that was longer than his head and it was so silly, but it worked. The other characters I've seen in the preview don't look that great, either, but Vash was iconic.
Well, I wasn't going to watch a choppy PS2 FMV 'anime' anyway, but this still bothers me.

File:[SubsPlease] Ars no Kyojuu….jpg (268.88 KB,1920x1080)

Ars no Kyojuu

I think this one has potential. I admit that I'm a sucker for middle-aged guys that have a laissez-faire attitude towards their own death, though. Humans fighting giant monsters and a mysterious girl with strong powers. It's not quite original, but I thought it did it well.

File:[SubsPlease] Ars no Kyojuu….jpg (259.52 KB,1920x1080)

I forgot to mention that it's also an Original and it has a little girl merchant who says "nyaa" a lot. That's worth some points for sure.

File:bc8e6a6a04.png (651.17 KB,870x522)

>Onimai: I'm Now Your Sister!

Potentially great, likely good
Only took a few minutes to establish that it's well made. Starting us off with characters doing interesting things rather than a narrator. Rockin PsychoPass tier OP. Could be kind of simplistic besides from this though
> The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady
Great action, cute MC, main character who wasn't given the tools to win. The character interactions are kind of spergy, but the characters have realistic issues.
>Farming Life in Another World
That farming anime you were looking for but never got. I never actually wanted a farming anime though
>Giant Beasts of Ars
Jazzy OP that gets you interested. The action is well done. Basic fantasy setting. Not getting my hopes up
>Sugar Apple Fairy Tale
Pretty gritty for something so cute. Something feels off about it all though. Romance of a slave and his owner.
>Tsurune - The Linking Shot
Good aesthetics and music. Sport archery story kind of slow and simplistic
>Tomo-chan Is a Girl!
Nice opening shots. A story about tomboy who is in love with a friend. Not particularly well paced for a romcom.

Didn't entertain in 5 mins
>Spy Classroom
Good setting. Typical edgy characters without any meta gags. Looks like a show without anything to it besides CGDCT with occasional action. Feels like it's following the trends of a few shows.
>Technoroid OVERMIND
The first 5 seconds had an animation issue. Seems like a boyband show.
>My Life as Inukai-san's Dog
Kind of strange ecchi from the perspective of a dog
>The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague
Good OP, not much else

>The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World
Your typical fantasy protagonist with a weak story. Seems to have some backing but the animation quality is poor.
>Chillin' in My 30s after Getting Fired from the Demon King's Army

Still need to check
Watched a bunch of poor anime in a row and don't feel like continuing yet
> The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten
> Trigun Stampede
> The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World
> NieR:Automata Ver1.1a
There's still a bunch of things left. We'll be in touch

File:R-1673115476351.jpg (263.26 KB,1920x1080)

Surely I can't be the only one reminded of Geass when looking at this anime, right?

File:[SubsPlease] Sugar Apple F….jpg (332.03 KB,1920x1080)

>Sugar Apple Fairy Tale
>Pretty gritty for something so cute. Something feels off about it all though. Romance of a slave and his owner
I don't know about that, it seemed to me fairly normal shoujo with a bit of grit to it. Although I did enjoy it for what it's worth.

The Trigun anime has a nice opening. Very well done CGI. Western studio tier

damn, trigun remake is surprisingly good... though i don't actually know the original

File:[SubsPlease] Buddy Daddies….jpg (205.1 KB,1920x1080)

Buddy Daddies
Very similar to Spy X Family as I already said, but certainly quite a bit darker and not afraid to show bodies with bullet holes in them. Although dark, it's also silly such as blocking gunfire with a cooking pan.
I would not put it in the same quality level as Spy X Family, but it would be very difficult to live up to that. Possibly fujobait (I'm bad at detecting these things).
I'm definitely giving this a chance.

Also it earns points for being an anime Original.

I didn't feel much humor from it. Could've been nice if they'd minimized the tragic past stuff and emphasized their dame ningen addictions, but I'm pretty sure it's just going to be a "getting your life back together through the power of friendship" deal set in a fantasy world.

It's a really weird setup that keeps doing the generic shoujo stuff where he gets all moody and kabedons her so she can squee and dokidoki, but she's supposed to be the master who will be abandoned and killed if she lets him have control. I'd find it interesting if she were actually wary of him, but instead they're going for the naive girl who melts his icy heart and it just doesn't seem to fit. It'd probably be a lot more believable if the slavery system were established as more than just "I can grab your wing to make you feel pain" because every time he grabs her arms I just wonder why he doesn't free himself then and there.

File:[SubsPlease] Osananajimi ….webm (5.49 MB,1280x720)

>Technoroid OVERMIND
>The first 5 seconds had an animation issue. Seems like a boyband show
Heh... Guess they put their B-team to work on the boyband anime then.

Anime is getting easier to make leading to a lot of otherwise disasters becoming more of a mediocre work that is focused on exploiting popularity.

Perhaps us anime watchers need to push our criticisms beyond what they were only a few years ago and start asking for things that are more philosophically demanding

File:03 Shoujo Kakumei Utena (1….jpg (124.92 KB,960x720)

People have been critical over the philosophy of anime for a long time. It's just that most of the real critique has been on mostly contained to blogs and imageboards instead of YouTube.

nice chin. I rate it 10/10 best chins of all time

File:2af15dd797.png (504.56 KB,929x521)

I like the premise of 80,000 Gold.
I wonder where it will go with it

File:1673109833663545.webm (2.03 MB,1920x1080)

>Well, I wasn't going to watch a choppy PS2 FMV 'anime' anyway
Well... actually... Studio Orange does CGI right. So it looks finely done for CG. Although for some reason they replaced Milly with an old man.

File:1673109475792478.webm (210.77 KB,1920x1080)

Also I hate to admit it, but they have CGI looking cute

I don't think that looks either cool or cute.

I think you should have a solid opinion on it if you're going to be dismissing it. I quite like it having never seen the original and it's one of the few anime this season I want another episode of.

I kinda like this because it's got a lot of neat motion, at the same time I still prefer the older designs of the show and the movie. The one with the hat is Meryl, right? Honestly looked like a trap to me at a first glance, but maybe that's me being gay and forgetful.
I'm not the biggest fan of Trigun anyways, so it's not like the change is gonna bother me. Let's see how it goes in the stream.

>I think you should have a solid opinion on it
I do, my solid opinion on how it looks is that it looks neither cool nor cute.

but that's wrong because it's objectively not just cute and cool, but also cool and cute

Wait, that's not a trap? Gay.

No, I'm right and you're wrong instead.

I think it's due to the coat obscuring her figure.

File:[SubsPlease] Isekai Nonbir….jpg (279.92 KB,1920x1080)

3DCG is improving, but not there yet. The choppiness is still too much for me, but the limitations of 3D facial animation is being reduced.

Isekai Nonbiri Nouka

An isekai about a guy being a farmer with a magical morphing work tool. I liked the first episode with him establishing himself, but judging by the opening minute (clearly showing some point in the future) and the OP it's not going to stay this way for the whole show. He's surely going to save some girls from dragons or something and establish a town. Hopefully that's the last episode, but I don't know.
Why can't a farming isekai just be about farming and crafting? People do spend thousands of hours in stuff like Minecraft so I think it would sell. Yeah, cute girls are nice, but sometimes a man just wants to shape the world around him

In >>102145? Where?

You can hardly tell its 3DCG in certain shots

>Isn't it normal for isekais to only use the premise once?
I think there's three loose types of isekai, in terms of how the MCs' background ties into the story:
Epic gamer gains the ability to game the fuck out of the world he's been reincarnated in, and uses this to become a legend while nerdgasming over kemonomimi, archetype characters, and such. It's just like my Japanese anime. Often kind of a regular fantasy story about a guy wanting to become the strongest warrior but with extra spice.
Ken Deshita would fall here, and that's why its focus on Fran really changed things up.
Doesn't bank so much on the videogame aspect as it does on the MC having a second shot at living the nice fantasy life they wish they could've had back on Earth. SoL stuff.
The least common, where the character has very specific objectives they actively pursue that are 100% based on their past, and the story could not take a place at all or would be radically different without such a central element. Think of Bookworm and Overlord.

These obviously overlap and aren't clean-cut, the idea is that in many cases the first two wouldn't change much if you took out the reincarnation, but it's not entirely irrelevant as one puts emphasis on the power fantasy while the other focuses on the relief of being free from the real world. That's how I see it.
Falling into one of the first two doesn't make something bad either, Mushoku has a lot of the first type and I like it, not in spite of it. Nor does being part of the third automatically make something good.

Farmer turned out to be a very good example of the quiet type.

80,000 looks to be like a Bookworm type of story with more otakuness and less fantasy.

it's got explicit violence AND the girl is present, so this immediately makes me like it better than sewagakari
overall not bad

File:131748l.jpg (139.81 KB,429x600)

Well, Revenger was a big surprise. This is one of the most generic and uninspiring images I've seen, but it's actually quite great. Samurai, guns, opium, Christians, and... revenge? It's quite bloody.
Another original, too. This seems like a good season for originals.

File:e3ea191a6180796fdba3a7dc1c….png (127.26 KB,450x450)

Revenger is why I like paying attention to names. Saw Gen Urobuchi on it and instantly knew I had to give it at least a shot, and it's turned into what I'm looking forward to more of most this season.

Also yeah, it's surprising how many originals there seems to be this season, and I'm enjoying each of them.

Sorry, that didn't come across clearly. What I meant was that isekai stories tend to not reference things from MC's previous world, at least in my view. There are exceptions, even outside the ones where getting back is the goal, but their old life is often just a passing reference about how they were a hikki or a salaryman or some other generic Japanese person, probably so the audience can fill in the gaps with their own life.

Yeah, because it's generally not relevant to the story, that's what makes the third type different.

Stella's such a klutz

File:[SubsPlease] Spy Kyoushits….jpg (277.57 KB,1920x1080)

It's like a mix of PriPri, AssClass, and Assault Lily... I enjoy it but there's something keeping me from really enjoying it.

I guess its now time for me to get started on this seasons anime, though I'm about 2 episodes late on most of it. For me winter season tends to not have much going on, so two straightforward romcoms and two good adaptations of manga I like is all I really need.

¥Looking forward to
Otonari no Tenshi-sama ni Itsunomanika Dame Ningen ni Sareteita Ken
Kubo-san wa Mob wo Yurusanai
Hirogaru Sky! Precure (really like the blue lead and her design)
Nijiyon Animation
¥Have already watched some of and am very happy with but to be honest I am a long time big fan of the manga so I was going to watch all of it anyway
Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san 2nd Attack
Oniichan wa Oshimai! (wow! what an adaptation!)
¥Have already watched some of and not interested in watching more
Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko!
Tsurune: Tsunagari no Issha
¥I will probably check out but not very enthusiastic about
Spy Kyoushitsu
Hikari no Ou
¥I sort of want to watch but for a reason likely wont
Mou Ippon! (the girls in this one don't seem all that cute to me)
Itai no wa Iya nano de Bougyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu. 2 (I watched most of season 1 but remember very little of it and don't feel like going back and rewatching)

Suzume no Tojimari has to be one of the best Shinkai films I have watched. If it wasn't for my personal attachment to 5cm per second (first one I watched and also still probably think its the best) and Garden of Words (love teacher student age gap and also the incomparable beauty of the visuals), I would say this was the best one. In this movie Shinkai actually does something different, and by different I mean that this movie has a strong coherent plot (with only one moment that ignores making sense to have a cool scene) and absolute no trace of a romance story of two people who like each other but for some reason cant be together. It even feels different in how it balances comedy with the more serious moments of the plot, I mean one of the main characters is a chair for most of the movie. I want to say it followed the typical Shinkai 'about the journey not the destination' but then towards the end it really brings it back and you get a holy shit moment when you realize something that there actually was a lot of foreshadowing for but you can't really know what it is foreshadowing until you reach the end of the movie. Really just amazing, this has to be one of the best movies I have ever seen.
Even in the visuals it takes a different direction than classic Shinkai, there is much less focus on big atmospheric shots and instead the atmosphere is given through the insane levels of detail each location has and the shot composition that does a good job of showing off this high level of detail while giving some cool angles. I would still say Garden of Words looks better, but this one has much more fluid animation which makes a big difference considering that there is some action in it. I could keep rambling but I will stop here, definitely going to go see it again when it comes out in my home country because its a great movie and also because I missed the backstory/important plot reveal about the cat as they were saying alot of words I didn't know.

>love teacher student age gap
>Hirogaru Sky! Precure
Did you like Yes! Precure 5? One of the Yes 5 movies actually has a kissu.

I havent watched it, I started getting into precure with star twinkle and the only one I have gone back to watch so far is mahoutsukai. I guess I'll put Yes next on the list

File:waterfox_wy5mWNYTnQ.png (642.68 KB,1260x719)

Hikari no Ou

From the preview I expected something action-y, but it's focused more on drama. The first episode was laying the framework so it's hard to say how it will turn out, but I find the premise very interesting.
Here is the basic premise, which is explained in the first episode:
It's a post-apocalyptic setting where "humanity died and was remade" and can no longer make effective use of fire. If a human body gets near it, it will spontaneously combust, or so a woman explained. But, there is a new, rare special fire that people can use and it's related to "Fire Hunters" and the fiery monsters that roam the wilderness now.
It might qualify as steampunk. I'm putting it in the seasonal stream, but I'm not sure how interested other people will be in it. Hoping for good things.
Originals are looking good this season, as was already said.

So is anyone watching Nagatoro or that other new bullying one? How are they compared to earlier stuff?

For some reason I haven't. I like Nagatoro too, maybe it's just burnout on the teasing genre.

The Kubo-san one? It's okay, feels more like a gag anime than a bullying one.

Didnt Nagatoro drop the teasing thing halfway through the first season and it just became a romcom?

yeah, the gyaru one. I think the tease was more that the main charcter is pure

Nagatoro can become relevant again with footservice

I think Takagi-san is the only one I still enjoy because Mina and her friends save it

I think I enjoyed takagi because she is hot and also I watched the movie and skipped the show
it drops the masochistic side to it but the teasing part wont be overtaken by the straightforward romcom part until towards the middle of the current season

I knew the kubo-san show and the nextdoor angel show would be very similar, but what I didn't expect was that kubo-san was incredibly boring and nextdoor angel is extremely comfy and gives off that warm feeling. its just better in every way, even in the more basic but overall better character designs and artstyle.
To be fully honest I was expecting the quality to be reversed, I greatly prefer gag comedy romcoms to comfy slow paced romcoms. I did not think a single one of the gags in kubo-san had any humor to them even though it was clearly trying to be funny.
if anyone in /qa/ is debating which of the two generic romcoms to watch I would say nextdoor angel

File:Saitou ED.mp4 (8.51 MB,1280x720)

Possibly my favorite ED of the season. It sounds so familiar to me, kind of like a Higurashi song I can't pinpoint. The lyrics remind me of it, too, so I kept the subs on for this. (nice to see 'official' ED subs)

Yeah, I can definitely hear something similar to what I've heard in Higurashi before. But it's sorta hard to pinpoint what it is.... Maybe one of the "you"s?

File:01 - Sora No Mukou.mp3 (4.37 MB)

I think it might have been this one that I remember playing during a flashback of Keichi's dad meeting Rika and Satoko playing in a field for the first time

File:[SubsPlease] Ars no Kyojuu….jpg (402.92 KB,1920x1080)

sad to say but ep3 was bored

Had action and funny. On par with the rest of the episodes

File:[SubsPlease] Spy Kyoushits….jpg (216.66 KB,1920x1080)

It's really amazing that this anime was one of the most popular at the onset of the season, and on episode 3 it's probably the worst trash I've seen out of the batch. Went from introducing the main cast as a bunch of rookie spies fresh out of the academy, and near failing no less, being put to the test on a mission even the best spies in the world would struggle on. To in Ep2 them superspeeding through whatever "training" they did and having ep3 being them easily beating the impossible mission with no casualties. There was potential for a story in this, but they just skipped through it all and any development for no reason, what a mess.

Just putting the word SPY in your title gets you instant popularity

File:Overlord_Bonus_Volume.png (6.94 MB,1801x2560)

I realized this quite late, but there's actually an Overlord spinoff volume where AInz is transported by himself, without Nazarick, and becomes a boukensha now that he's finally free of any responsiblities. Lmao.

Also, magical vampire loli, and Ainz's toughest fight ever. Good volume.

Is that character evileye

Alternate universe Evileye, miss Keno. It's like 400 years in the past so she's an actual child at that point.

File:[SubsPlease] Buddy Daddies….jpg (259.31 KB,1920x1080)

I think you guys had an Overlord thread around here, didn't you?
By the way... MIRI IS CUTE!

Ayup, >>92916, but its time has passed.

miri is a dumb stupid annoying child and i dont like her

File:Hikari No Ou - OP.mp4 (19.96 MB,1280x720)

The full song is out now and apparently nyaa did it almost instantly. Wow.
As for OPs, I have to say that Hikari no Ou (Fire Hunter) is my favorite from what I've seen. Episode three was pretty great after episode two was kind of disappointing. Good, stylish animation and an interesting backstory. The animators do seem to be cutting some corners with manga-like panels and sometimes people talking over a black screen of Japanese symbols when they talk about a character or concept. There's also 3D, but it's more tolerable than most because it's not so choppy and they actually used textures.
But, I can forgive this stuff because it's so nice to watch them move during the rest of the show.

it's interesting to see how they approach cutting costs

Not bad, all things considered. Doesn't have the roughness of the first two words, but the whisper is alright.

What's holding it back is that no one is doing any effects on the audio like the Japanese did. It's just his raw voice while Japan added reverb on top of it

Huh, true. It's most noticeable on the last word.

i don't know...
Still sounds like the en VA is just reading lines and doesn't understand the character. The voice isn't chunni enough, he's not putting on a performance like the character is meant to and like the jp VA does.

I don't disagree, but by "all things considered" I mean "compared to regular English VAs".

Did anyone end up watching the 4th season of Date a Live to its finish a season or two ago? Was it worth watching?

It was okay. Introduced girl #2 and girl #6. This completes the cast of #1 through #10. Some plot advancement with Kurumi and Westcott. Ended on a cliffhanger so now we wait for Season 5, which was teased as the finale.

BOFURI omg they made up for the cg in spades

File:[SubsPlease] Ars no Kyoju….webm (2.14 MB,1920x1080)

I guess, but the other episodes showed a bit more promise as they were early on. Now it's about halfway into the season and nothing much has really happened besides some ventures into other lands that feel almost touristy and a small bit of plot buildup in the background. Which could be good if the anime engaged you to the characters better, but as of right now I'm not really feeling any connection to them.

Also funny that they overlaid an electrical ost with flutes playing even though there's no flutes in it. Didn't really notice on the first episode, but as things have gone on it seems like the budget is getting thinner and thinner.

File:[SubsPlease] Tensei Oujo t….jpg (296.09 KB,1920x1080)

On the other I'm more enjoying the yuri princess anime. Only issue is that it tacked on isekai for some reason and it'd be much better if that just never even existed. I like the characters and the romantic development is nice. Really hoping they do more yuri princess things.

it is getting a bit boring

that part was pretty hype

Nier anime is frozen due to corona. Episode 4 and beyond on hold.

No it's because of internal controversy over the /ss/ episode

are you an insider?

/ss/? Where?

File:[SubsPlease] Revenger - 05….jpg (292.38 KB,1920x1080)

I think that Revenger may end up being the sleeper hit of the season with how little talked about it seems to be. Episode 5 was on another level from the ones before it. Accomplished by introducing doubt into the morality of the organization without needing to force it. Nio played the perfect role of an immature and non-chalant chaotic force that bends the rules of what does and does not constitute allowed. It makes me eager to see how his selfish interests may end up colliding with the church.

My favorite episode of the entire season so far. Nio having the agency and willingness to go and prostitute himself again, with the man that was his previous owner, for the sake of the children is nothing short of admirable, it's even better that you don't have the rest of the cast going sugggeeee Nio-sama what a hero you are.
Better yet was the tent scene, it all flowed really well, their twisted love didn't need a minutes-long monologue to get the feeling across, just a handful of sentences and a few motions. You can see their mutual understanding.

File:[SubsPlease] Revenger - 05….jpg (375.8 KB,1920x1080)

>for the sake of the children
I think you missed the moral quandary here... The act on Nio's part only served his interests.

File:vlcsnap✝[SubsPlease] Reven….png (1.01 MB,1280x720)

>for the sake of the children
Nio isn't doing it for the sake of the children but for his own sake. The children are a convenient excuse for him to present to Yuen and the others. Nio is broken, a psychopath. He loves killing probably to the point that killing the Doan was done more out of love than out of revenge. He wanted to kill Doan and he knew that there had to be a moral pretext for killing Doan that the others and the Church would agree with.

Oh. I..
Yeah, that makes more sense.

Oh, I forgot to mention this myself. Yes, it was a fantastic episode and the climax was extremely well done. Definitely the highlight of the season so far.
I wonder if they'll ever explain muscle guy's deal as the show seems relatively grounded apart from his thing

no don't, i like the wonky animation

loooooots of anime
not all of it amazing though

Oh hey, Kadokawa is making one of these chibi shows for Kage, even as it's airing. Neat. Got 16 episodes out already.

That stuff seems increasingly common, but it's rarely ever subbed so I don't bother. It's good to see if you understand Japanese, though. I know last season the Alchemist girl had one running at the same time

Huh, you're right, Kage has subs while Shinmai doesn't. It may be that the former was given more importance for whatever reason, seeing as its artstyle is much closer to Quartet's than Shinmai's is.

You know, aside from Gamers, this studio has a nice track record for nice visuals.

When does the next season start? I'm way too far behind to catch up on everything...

You're not missing much

>BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense. 2 episode 7 has been delayed to March 8 due to the impact of COVID-19 on the production schedule.

sucks. There was Nier which did this too. I think it's due to mainland outsourcing and their weaker healthcare industry+culture

Same thing happened to Megaton Musashi S2 ... twice now. Broadcast started last October, after production delays for various reasons including COVID they only got 10 of the planned 15 episodes done, took a break and resumed broadcasting in February, and then after just 3 more episodes they had another COVID-related delay and the last 2 episodes are postponed again until March.

something's going on in south korea and i have no idea what it is
the data and the news say cases are fairly low, but SOMETHING's wrong and i don't think it's due to just china

I don't know if I'm just burnt out or if the season's actually weak

It's fairly weak.

psycho princess is pretty fulfilling

File:[SubsPlease] Rougo ni Sona….jpg (361.54 KB,1920x1080)

This one?

There's multiple things that I don't really want to get into here but as usual the Koreas find themselves at the center of east-west tensions along with some domestic turmoil.

I feel like for the South, the K-Wave (which I feel is a media creation, The US, UK, Turkey, Mexico, Brazil, India, Australia and China all export far more culture than them, especially when it comes to television drama. It seems only weird teen girls ride the K-Wave) and it's ensuing soft power has kind of been used by the establishment to make everything seem fine there when it's the same stuff that has always happened in korea, minus the dictatorship in the south.

>the K-Wave which I feel is a media creation [...] It seems only weird teen girls ride the K-Wave

Literally hours after I posted this my gen x mom sent me something about BLACKPINK

I like the season, tons of isekai and fantasy stuff to watch. There's something everyday for me to watch, except Wednesday now. Kage no Jitsu is over and Bofuri is postponed.

File:[SubsPlease] Benriya Saito….jpg (Spoiler Image,155.04 KB,1920x1080)

(Episode 7 of Saitou-san semi-spoiler. The seasonal stream hasn't seen this episode yet FYI)
Saitou-san... wow. While I miss the comedic parts, the emotional ED makes a lot more sense after I caught up after missing some episodes. I'm a sucker for this stuff, especially with good male characters.
It all seems so very Utawarerumono-esque to pull in the reader/viewer with the good times before things take a turn. Episode 7 is fantastic.

I think these season feels not so great because they put everything on Saturday

Definitely feels kuso having so much to watch on a single day.

it's the only good anime this season

Well if your opinion of Tensei Oujo is anything to go by I'm glad that we can both agree Onimai is up in the AOTS category.

File:[Okay-Subs] Onii-chan wa O….jpg (232.22 KB,1920x1080)

Miyo probably tastes like lilies

ive come around to the onimai adaptation, I think they just leaned too hard into fanservice at the start to grab attention but now they cute is really shining through

Meh, I don't regret dropping it.

the horny-posting obsession around it makes me go in the opposite direction

from next season, but it's apparently some sorta cultist lolidom show
leaving it here so i don't forget about it

Wait so the premise is the guy brought over a false god from his original world or something? Seems neat, another thing to add to the list of what I'm watching next season.

seems like it
the part about executing old people sounds dumb but if it justifies a loli cult then i'm cool with that

so is bofuri still stalled

yes, until next wednesday, like ojisan

ojisan stalled AGAIN?

they aired a single episode and then paused it again

curse the japs to a thousand years of misfortune for their transgressions!

File:[SubsPlease] Benriya Saito….jpg (270.4 KB,1920x1080)

I don't know how to feel about Saitou-san... There's so much tonal whiplash...

pre-namek: excellent
the rest so far: ehhhhhh

I love it. Reminds me of Ascendance of a Bookworm.

How so?

It starts off with a girl inventing things and being a shrewd little merchant. Then the nobility get involved and the show becomes more serious, although every once in a while, we see traces of Myne being a lovable gremlin bookworm.

Hmm, honestly, that sounds more like Mitsuha than Saitou to me.

File:Utawarerumono.S02E04.False….jpg (351.44 KB,1920x1080)

Silly stuff before the story gets dark and serious is a pretty good way to make you care for the characters and empathize with them, although I certainly wasn't expecting anything like it with Saitou. It could be that in the source material there was a longer period of silliness before things got serious.
I wonder if the writer planned it ahead of time or if it a later decision.

File:[Pompous] Eiga Daisuki Pom….jpg (304.82 KB,1920x1038)

Well, for me the jump from silly sketch comedy in a goofy fantasy world to serious and gritty dark fantasy was a bit hard to take, and it wasn't really transitioned into that well. Now with the 3 episodes of dark out of the way it's somewhat back to sketch comedy but not because it's somewhat still serious and swapping between comedy sketch and serious storybuilding with hardcuts and no real sense of trying to mix the two. If it tried to do one of them well I think it could pull it off but constantly switching between the two is a bit weird.

Unlike Utawarerumono or other more serious titles where the SoL is used as setup for a more serious storyline, this kinda feels more like if Cromartie suddenly shifted into a 100% serious seinen. It's a 180 tonal shift compared to subtle ramp up.

Caught up in a day, rare for a seasonal to keep my attention... I like it and Chris and Rani a lot.

Now the question is, how did we miss this in the stream and how do we address this critical failure going forwards?

File:vlcsnap✝[SubsPlease] Eiyuu….png (592.4 KB,1280x720)

My fool proof way of not missing good shows like Eye in the Bayou is by watching every isekai show. It never fails.

my 30 sec per isekai rule failed here

Started watching Grimgar instead because I saw something interesting about it on Youtube.

Anime closer to Gob Slayer or Log Horizon are more my taste than I beat up the nobble bully type shows, though they're more entertaining than nothing

I remember having issues with Grimgar but I can't remember what they were and lots of people liked it so maybe it is good.

it's slow paced and focused more on character emotions as an isekai SoL than an ability centered power fantasy. If I were watching it seasonally I might be offput by how slow things are moving.

Maybe that was my issue since I did watch it seasonally.

File:[SubsPlease] Sugar Apple F….jpg (284.95 KB,1920x1080)

How to drop any goodwill I have towards your series and make me consider dropping in 1 episode before the end...

File:[Subsplease] Hikari No Ou ….mp4 (10.71 MB,1280x720)

(video is from episode 9, not really a spoiler)

Guess what just had a second season announced?
Hikari no Ou (Fire Hunter) ended at 10 episodes.
It has a lot of slow moments to it, but it's building up. I like the atmosphere its unique style with visually distinct characters. The animation quality is poor at times, but you can tell that they're trying. It saddens me quite a bit to see passionate people limited by time and money.
Let's hope they have more time with S2.

Also the sound design is excellent. The soundtrack is especially good

Nier anime got delayed, again.

File:adbbf04ab3.jpg (401.01 KB,2150x1190)

mehh, well I guess her biological father is dead so her mom's probably a better person now. Still it's a stupid trope i've seen in a lot of anime which paints a bad picture of fosters(and imigration)... well I guess that's an episode that makes me think more about anime than anything else airing this year

File:[SubsPlease] Urusei Yatsur….jpg (394.64 KB,1920x1080)

Think Urusei Yatsura is the only anime this season that had me actually bursting out laughing like a retard. They need to make more remakes if all of them are going to be this high quality.

File:[SubsPlease] Sugar Apple F….jpg (250.13 KB,1920x1080)

kimo NTR anime

I prefered the gay kissu finale...

We're in the ERA OF NTR

What the heck? Didn't expect that to happen.

haven't watched it, is it actually cutieing instead?

I mean romanceing

File:[SubsPlease] Kyokou Suiri ….jpg (253.61 KB,1920x1080)

Nuh uh I was typing the post-filter word on purpose but I forgot that the qu-one becomes romance instead of cutie.

I'm never watching anime again.

Wow, that's a long covid outbreak!

Just avoid shoujo you'll be fine

Nobody answered my question. Did it happen to a girl or to a guy.

File:275895.jpg (115.99 KB,400x593)

It's a shoujo and this is the cover, take a guess.

I like how in shoujo the guy doing the NTR looks like the guy who would be NTR'd in media aimed at men

Oh ok, thanks. Then it's good instead of bad.

The Bollywood ending

Saitou is so strange to me.
It starts off as a nice comedy consisting mostly of short sections with a lot of twists on regular characters, there's a grandpa king that solo's the demon lord and then plays chess with him, an assassin that gets banished to hell and returns with demon nakama, a dorfzard that fights by blowing himself up, it's really good stuff. All of these disconnected mini episodes that can stand by themselves but end up tying together to develop the story.
But halfway through it decides to ditch that structure entirely, becomes super serious, and uncritically picks up a bunch of shonen tropes without doing anything interesting with it. You got long dramatic fights against monsters with phases, powerups, flashbacks, and it feigns killing off Morlock like four times. The demon wolf gets introduced purely so he can fight the party next episode, unlike how all the other relevant characters.
Then in the very last episode it returns to the original structure like nothing happened, and I don't understand why it couldn't have stayed like that all throughout. Discovering Morlock's past could've perfectly been developed like that, I just don't get it.

File:[SubsPlease] Benriya Saito….jpg (272.33 KB,1920x1080)

I agree, although I really liked Saitou-san. I'm generally fine with such things as long as it's not too dark, and Saitou wasn't (although it seemed like it was going to be a bunch of times). I think the character interactions and stories were quite nice, and the designs for the demons were fantastic. It makes me wonder if someone involved has experience designing monsters for other media.
It's really an enigma because it did different things very well, but because of that it's like it was never able to fully flourish in one of the directions. Kissu's namesake suffers from this as well, but I still love both of them.
I think the theme of starting with the good times and then a conflict of characters facing conflict-- struggling to bring those days back-- is a pretty strong formula. It makes me wonder what it could have done with more episodes. I'm kind of curious about the source material now, or if the anime was a very condesnsed version of it since it seems like it reached fully resolution.

Of course, going from lighthearted threads to darker ones isn't anything too crazy, the strange part is the clash in structures.
Think of Tsukuyomi's lighter SoL sections as being maybe AAA-BBB-CCC-DDD, parts that are smaller than multi-episode conflicts that would be AAAAAAAA-BBBBBBB. A linear series of episodes whose difference is their length more than their topic. The first half of Saitou, however, does A-B-A-C-D-B-E-A-G-C, which is completely different. It has multiple disconnected sub-plots it alternates between, it jumps from here to there and from there to yonder without a sense of unified linearity, which I really, really liked.
It's not just a tone or genre shift but a structure shift as well and that's what makes it so weird to me.

At the end of the season, lolicons rein supreme

Kage is #1 in MAL viewership numbers for that period

Onimai was a bad adaptation first and foremost

It's absurd alright.
Absurdly good.
