What Linux do you use?

If you use a derivative, pick the one it's based on. (Yes, I know Ubuntu and Mint are Debian derivatives, you know why they're options anyway).

 No.6523

puppy linux

 No.6524

ubuntu but i'm thinking of switching soon but i'm also really tard

 No.6525

arch isn't even a distro lmao

You are NOT tard! Stop calling yourself tard! You'll be perfectly fine on Linux!

no i mean i'm already on linux and have been for years ever since windows borderline bricked my old laptop BUT i'm tard and keep breaking shit
somehow i can't reinstall steam because there's a package that won't download, that's the sort of dumb error that has kept piling up so the thought is to switch FROM ubuntu TO some other distro

 No.6528

>>6527
That's weird. Steam has its own installer so you should just need to download the .deb from their site and let it update itself. I haven't used Ubuntu since the Amazon stuff started, but I've never had any issue on any Debian-based distro. I'm sure it would work on Arch too considering that's what SteamOS is based on, but I wouldn't recommend that if you're too tard for Ubuntu.

 No.6529

What Distro would you recommend me if I really like the penguin? He's cute.

 No.6530

I use Void, it works fine and it's snappy, I like it.

 No.6531

I have only used Mint, but it got the job done for practically everything. I also love mint as a color.

I use Ubuntu Server, Debian, and Proxmox VE.

I use rocky but that's just because of work, otherwise ubuntu.

i dont know much about linux, but how do you guys cope with not being able to use certain programs on linux vs windows? i edit videos with premiere pro, which isnt supported. do you just have multiple computers, or what?

You know dual boot and vms exist, right?

 No.6560

>>6558
For things that really do not have a Linux alternative, I either use Wine and/or Proton, or just dual boot windows. I haven't booted Windows in a while though

 No.6561

>>6559
i did not know about that, no.

 No.6562

well to clarify, i did know vms existed, but i wasnt aware you could have two operating systems on one pc, and could use them interchangeably. color me intrigued

 No.6563

>>6562
Dual boot is a huge pain in the butt. I just either don't use it at all or use a Linux alternative if I have to, but usually I've not found a Windows program I NEED to use. Helps not having a job that forces Windows soft I guess.

 No.6564

For VNs etc that are usually only Windows, I have a gaming VM (for not at all demanding games).

 No.6565

>>6564
Isn't it the case now that Wine has come so far and Windows has fallen so hard that now those older VNs are easier to play on Linux than Windows 11?

 No.6566

>>6565
A VN I wanted to play always got stuck at the opening sequence(?) after the prologue, so I just gave up in Wine and use the VM. It's 10, not 11. Might try Wine again if they force 10. Speaking of, probably should download the ISO for win10 for archival...

>>6558
You don't need them most of the time. There are decent office alternatives or you could lean on web software that Google puts out. Microsoft also has some browser based office software.
If your favorite games aren't resource intensive then you can use Proton if they're on Steam.
Otherwise you better be ready to debug

If there's something you need, yeah you can try to hack it into working with Windows emulators. But you shouldn't bet on it.

The propaganda for "accessible" Linux is nonsense.
Just get a Mac

they suck

the only video game i play is slippi melee, and otherwise i just use my computer to watch anime with mpv, make anki deck cards, and edit videos with premiere pro. i'd either have to work around editing on premiere pro somehow if i switched to linux, or just switch to a linux compatible software which sounds like a major pain in the ass

KDEnlive is very good. But I only occasionally mix some clips together.
https://kdenlive.org/

You already have your answer for melee and etc. Simple enough programs with multiple releases.

Having Linux running is as simple as putting Mint on a bootable flashdrive and hitting Next a lot

 No.6570

>>6569
yeah, thanks. seems all my bases are covered, especially if i can play vns on a virtual machine or wine. i will look into ways to get around premiere pro and delve further into this debacle to tackle at a later day (after ive eaten an apple)

 No.6571

Every OS is needed for something unless you're going off the big 3 into weird OS like Solaris or BSD. I don't know those, but I mean more in terms of software written for them. No one is exclusively a Redox dev.

>>6570
Watch out for VNs. You probably do want Windows on those. A laptop is handy if you want to do things like that.

 No.6572

>>6571
>you probably do want Windows on those
perhaps i can work out a dual boot system specifically for vns and premiere. or as you said, invest in a separate windows laptop

 No.6573

>>6572
yeah, I run my Mac and Linux off of laptops for programming and hook them up to a monitor. I posted a picture in the previous OS thread

>get around premiere pro
If you really don't care for your time and headache, you can try to passthrough your GPU to the Windows VM to get GPU power to run premiere pro via VM. IIRC it's possible.
Thinking of getting a second PC myself, for casual gaming. Nothing grand like a 4090 or anything, just the bare minimum hardware from 10 years ago that will just barely run the games I play.
>>6572
Honestly, you don't want to dual boot. Having to completely shutdown your current workflow to play games for a few hours is a big pain. If it's VNs (and the likes) they should run on a VM without a problem.

 No.6575

>>6569
>KDEnlive is very good
I disagree. It's still missing a lot of basic stuff, filters, sub editor is very barebones and v2 has been in the development hell for years.
It's ok for simple hobbist editing. Even then, not having an actual screen shake effect for the memes is a travesty.

NTA, but I THINK to have recently read that there's supposed to be a way to "dual-boot" two OSes at the same time, with switching between them being as quick and easy as just switching a user. Ever heard of something like that? I could be totally wrong, I just think to have seen something like that on the side when I was researching something completely different. Hadn't heard about something like that before, so the info just stuck with me.

I'm more surprised so many people are using independent distros. Like 90% of notable distros are spun out from Deb, Arch, or RHEL. Are as many people using Void as mainstream distros or what?

Arch is for people who like to talk about how they use Arch so conversations on tech imageboards disproportionately mention it.

>>6558
1. You quit your job.
2. Pray Wine works.
3. You just use Windows.

But yeah, I have a bunch of computers.

I installed arch the arch way (in VM) to learn things. Then installed a real distro (Fedora back then, now OpenSUSE) on the actual hardware. Seeing how most screenshots in ricing threads show runtime of ~30 minutes on average, I assume most people do the same and just treat it as a toy.

We do use RHEL servers at work, but I got out of IT a long time ago so I never touch them. I've used Fedora at home and it's fine, but there's just nothing that keeps me there over other options.
