What Linux do you use?
If you use a derivative, pick the one it's based on. (Yes, I know Ubuntu and Mint are Debian derivatives, you know why they're options anyway).

somehow i can't reinstall steam because there's a package that won't download, that's the sort of dumb error that has kept piling up so the thought is to switch FROM ubuntu TO some other distro
No.6528
>>6527That's weird. Steam has its own installer so you should just need to download the .deb from their site and let it update itself. I haven't used Ubuntu since the Amazon stuff started, but I've never had any issue on any Debian-based distro. I'm sure it would work on Arch too considering that's what SteamOS is based on, but I wouldn't recommend that if you're too tard for Ubuntu.

I use Void, it works fine and it's snappy, I like it.

I use rocky but that's just because of work, otherwise ubuntu.

>>6558You don't need them most of the time. There are decent office alternatives or you could lean on web software that Google puts out. Microsoft also has some browser based office software.
If your favorite games aren't resource intensive then you can use Proton if they're on Steam.
Otherwise you better be ready to debug
If there's something you need, yeah you can try to hack it into working with Windows emulators. But you shouldn't bet on it.
The propaganda for "accessible" Linux is nonsense.

Every OS is needed for something unless you're going off the big 3 into weird OS like Solaris or BSD. I don't know those, but I mean more in terms of software written for them. No one is exclusively a
Redox dev.
>>6570Watch out for VNs. You probably do want Windows on those. A laptop is handy if you want to do things like that.

>>6570>get around premiere proIf you really don't care for your time and headache, you can try to passthrough your GPU to the Windows VM to get GPU power to run premiere pro via VM. IIRC it's possible.
Thinking of getting a second PC myself, for casual gaming. Nothing grand like a 4090 or anything, just the bare minimum hardware from 10 years ago that will just barely run the games I play.
>>6572Honestly, you don't want to dual boot. Having to completely shutdown your current workflow to play games for a few hours is a big pain. If it's VNs (and the likes) they should run on a VM without a problem.
No.6575
>>6569>KDEnlive is very goodI disagree. It's still missing a lot of basic stuff, filters, sub editor is very barebones and v2 has been in the development hell for years.
It's ok for simple hobbist editing. Even then, not having an actual screen shake effect for the memes is a travesty.

>>6574>Having to completely shutdown your current workflow to play games for a few hours is a big pain.NTA, but I THINK to have recently read that there's supposed to be a way to "dual-boot" two OSes at the same time, with switching between them being as quick and easy as just switching a user. Ever heard of something like that? I could be totally wrong, I just think to have seen something like that on the side when I was researching something completely different. Hadn't heard about something like that before, so the info just stuck with me.

No.6607
>>6605If you're just trying to test it out a VM might be better, but if you've got the extra storage space there's nothing wrong with dual booting. Mint's pretty hard to fuck up so it's not like you need a working computer to look things up at every step. I would recommend shrinking your Windows partition in Windows before starting, though. Then just select the free space when it asks where you want to install Mint and you should be good. You should be able to access everything on your Windows partition from the Linux one, but the same is not true in reverse so you'll need the thumb drive to move data back to Windows.
