Understanding the language does probably help, yeah.

 No.20746

My ability to understand Japanese is probably like 20%. I can kind of understand what they're saying and the broad strokes, but details are completely lost on me. I should probably study up one of these days, but "learning" from listening and putting together common meanings subconsciously from subtitles would probably poison my understanding and ability to learn. I wonder how other people deal with that sort of problem, especially since I'd imagine it's a fairly common one in the case of Japanese in particular.

You... you guys know what 'subs' mean, right?

What?

The (former) lack of space between url and text was because of a markup bug.

Japanese Expert™ here, this doesn't happen. Quite the opposite in fact. It gives you a big head start.

I've heard before that effectively "learning" from language spoken on TV if that's all you're hearing from can sort of "poison" the way you think, since the way that's spoken on TV is obviously very exaggerated and not typical of the spoken or written language. Small children's shows were the objective is genuinely to teach words and spelling is a bit of an exception, but that already targets a much different demographic than most people will be exposed to if older and "learning" through watching TV stuff.

>It gives you a big head start.
That's a relief if true. I do have a lot of free time this year... Maybe I really should get to trying to learn a bit more.

Uh, yeah, it'd be terrible if you were poisoned into being mainly just good at understanding Japanese media, that'd really ruin your ability to learn Japanese in order to ingest Japanese media.

So you're not a Japanese expert, you're a Japanese media expert. Good to know.

1. Language acquisition is not a one-way process where if you don't get everything right the first time, you've crippled your ability to learn.
2. Largely speaking, "anime Japanese" is different from "real Japanese" in the sense that it's scripted, professionally recorded and often deals with unrealistic scenarios. Other than that, the underlying structure of the language is exactly the same.

I dont like saying this but I aced my N4 test (not really a big deal but still) with nothing but anime and anki for kanji. Its as >>20802 said, they maybe speaking differently but they're still speaking the same language with the same grammatical structure. Though I have to say, shounen anime have the most "unique" speaking style. If you only watch that then you might be "poisoned", but many other anime aren't like that, in my experience. Many even have people talking like normal Japanese people.
