 No.9858[Last50 Posts]

I just remembered there is this neat website that's free to play with tons of custom maps to play on. It's called conquerclub. I played on it back in the day and it was really fun. Here are all the maps they have if you want to check it out:

https://www.conquerclub.com/public.php?mode=maps

We could also design our own map and get it accepted by the club. If I remember correctly they pretty much accept any map someone makes as long as it's fair to play. Website supports up to 8 people in game I think. Maybe more.

It'd be fun to play with Kissu or maybe form a team and play against another imageboard. I still have an old account but my premium membership expired back in 2010.

I think free accounts are limited to only playing 1-3 games at a time. If you pay $20 or so you can play in unlimited numbers of games. Nothing else is behind the pay wall.

Anyone interested?

Some of the maps have custom rules and objectives. This one has nuclear bombs. Other had long range guns, ships and other things like that. A bunch of maps simulate old battles from history.

They have the standard map to of course.

That sounds pretty cool. Man, Risk, I haven't played that in like 20 years. All I remember is trying to get Australia at the beginning.

Yeah I used to play that strategy a lot. It's comfy down there. I tried to start from Japan/Asia so many times and would always get slaughtered. But one time I managed to win by starting in Japan and somehow holding Asia on my second or third turn. If you hold Asia on the regular map you get a huge troop bonus.

I should have mentioned. We don't have to play real time. The host can set a timer for the turns. We used to set it for 24 hours. That way you can check in once a day, take your turn then go do something else if you're busy.

 No.9863

Maps are just some XML+images. Would be cool to make a map of all the boards. I have some ideas but I suck at photoshop. I could do the XML no problem.

They have a guide/handbook if anyone wants to check it out: https://www.conquerclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=649&t=150681

It looks fun. Never played that map before. It's a smaller map so it'd be best with 3-5 people.

If we don't have enough people the website provides CPU opponents that occupy territory at the start of the game. The work just like a real opponent and will attack you and everything.

One really cool feature is the fog of war. When it's turned on you can't see troops on parts of the map you're not next to. So you can hide from other players. I usually turn it on.

For anyone that isn't familiar with the rules the provide a good guide: https://www.conquerclub.com/public.php?mode=instructions1

Damn it. I made an account and when they re-designed the website they monetized the fuck out of everything. The Japan and everything but the standard map are locked. Along with the ability to host a private game with more than 4 players. They want you to grind games to earn credits that let you unlock stuff for free. Or you can give them $35 a year to avoid the grind.

I'm sorry. 10 years ago it wasn't like this at all. Why is everything getting worse? I really liked this game and they've ruined it by turning into a grind session.

If there is still enough interest I might send them the money to unlock all that crap. Only the host has to have it. Everyone else can play for free on those maps in a private game I think. I'll play with it tomorrow to see what free accounts can do.

So far I hate the re-design. The UI is decent but all this monetization is horrible. I wonder if someone cloned the old website. I imagine when they first did this change it pissed a lot of people off.

If 4 people want to play the standard map we can do that for now.

I'M RETARDED

I figured out how to make a game with more than 4 players on the Japan map. We're good to go. We just need to invite each other when we're ready.

My username is "Kissu". When you make an account send me an invite to be on your friends list. Or just post you username here and I can send you an invite when I make the game. Once you're invited it'll hold a spot for you for 24 hours.

 No.9875

why doesn't kissu just play it here?
I mean how hard is it to come up with a simple dice bot?

Haven't played risk type games in many years now, so it could be fun. And if i only need to check in like once or twice a day or so, because the turn timer is 24h, it shouldn't be much of a problem.
Though, what would happen if you did miss your 24h window (because of like unexpected life problems)? Does the turn just continue to the next player? Or do you get kicked/auto resigned?

 No.9885

I was about to get annoyed that someone had already taken my usual username, but it turns out that it was actually me who had made an account four years ago.

I'll make the game sometime tonight since we now have enough people. I added everyone that posted their username ITT. There is an option to send notifications to certain people when making the game. I'm not sure if that reserves a spot for you or not. I'm thinking no because you need paid account to make a password for private game/lobby.

Hopefully, no one decides to snipe our game or it reserves people a spot. If not we'll figure something out. I might give them the dirty money so we can have private games if people are interested in playing more than one.

Oh I should mention. There is a "fog of war" option that I usually turn on for games. I planned on using it but if people don't like the idea I'll keep it turned off. I'm mentioning this because if you post screenshots of the game in progress you'll give away information to everyone else.

Fog of war mode means you can't see what's happening more than 1 space beyond your borders. It'll show ??? instead of the number of troops there and who they belong to. I like it because it makes things more interesting. Aside from that the game I make will use the standard rules.

 No.9903

>>9902
>>9902
Another thing. I usually set the auto-drop option. This means the game automatically drops your initial troops on random spaces and you get whatever you get. Makes it much faster to play a game because we don't have to take multiple turns initially setting troops.

I planned on using it since it makes things more interesting. If you guys don't like the idea please let me know in the next 12 hours or so.

Unless you were sitting on more than I think you were I don't think you could have killed me that turn so don't feel too bad. You spread yourself too thin and I lucked into getting a nice troop bonus for once.

I wanted peace with blue, green and yellow at different points. Mainly because they were next to me and had a chance to finish me off really early. But I don't think it would have mattered for any of them because at the time the card bonuses were really low and they wouldn't have gained much out of it.

I just thought it was funny that every time I offered peace I got attacked and somehow managed to survive. Then I lucked into kill two players at key moments. I almost gave pink another turn at the end and he probably could have came back and won because the bonus was going to be huge after I turned in multiple sets on my last turn. I had to guess where yellow's last region was and got lucky that I had just enough to reach it. Which gave me enough to kill green which in turn gave me enough to win.

That's just how it is at the end of these dice games. I expected to die in the second or third round because my initial drop was really horrible and everyone attacked me in the opening round. Here is my initial drop.

 No.9990

>>9989
Well I had a 6 stack next to your five stack and if I'd gotten lucky I probably could have at least taken Nagasaki.
Unless you had a ton on Tsushima I had a good chance to at least remove you from the south, and secure another region for myself.
Leaving Okinawa in the hands of the white bot meant that I didn't get any region bonuses for the area, which was probably a big mistake.

 No.9991

File:round6.png (562.98 KB,601x604)

>>9990
It would have been close. I forgot you came this close to killing me off in round 6. I figured you had all of that region and would get the bonus for it on the next turn. I was sure I was dead.

But then again this game is known for screwing you over on dice rolls at the worse possible time. I lost 20+ troops with a 30+ stack against a 3 stack on my last push.

I wanted to make a deal with blue to give him half of the south in exchange for letting me that the one with the 2 bonus. But then you swept through the next turn after he blocked my easy way into the 2 bonus. So I had to go west instead.

 No.9992

>>9991
Plus you couldn't kill my 3 in the north at that point. You would have been better off killing blue and waiting to kill me on the next turn in the south. Would have secured the win unless one of the other players managed to kill another player on the next turn or so.

 No.9993

Everyone that played said they'd be interested in playing again tomorrow but they wanted a bigger map and no fog of war. I'll let you all pick the map this time. There are 200+ to choose from. Whatever you pick is fine with me some of them have some really cool mechanics like bombardments and things like that.

If no one picks a map by the time I check the thread tomorrow I'll pick a random one. Also I'm going to make sure everyone is here and ready when I make the game tomorrow because I'm pretty sure we can't be in more than 3 at a time. If we get sniped by a random looking to beat up on newbies again we're stuck and can't play together until one of the games we're already in finishes.

If this becomes a regular thing one of us should pay the toll so we can host private games.

Also reminder that we don't break our alliance on the other two games until we've beaten the snipers and punished them for invading our secret club. I checked a bit ago and they haven't even bothered to take their turns. That's a big problem with this website by the way. People pay the money so they can sit in unlimited games. Then they'll join hundreds of them at a time and refuse to take their turns if they know they're going to lose. It's why I stopped paying my yearly subscription fee back in the day after my friends IRL lost interest in playing.

Well they didn't really lose interest as such. We had a group of five and one of them couldn't handle losing and would threaten to start fights if games didn't go his way. So we all kind of stopped playing because of him. He found out we were playing without him and he wanted to fight about that too. We moved on to playing other fun things without him on PC since he only owned consoles.

We can play any map on the website. You can see them all here: https://www.conquerclub.com/public.php?mode=maps

Not having a paid account limits you in the following ways as far as I know.
¥ You can only be in 3 games at the same time (not sure of actual limit). Paid accounts can be in unlimited games
¥ Can't set password for games you create
¥ Can't make slots for games invite-only
¥ Can't play some game types (speed games, polymorphic games, battle royal...whatever those are)

They are basically putting invite only/private games behind a pay wall along with artificially limiting the number of games you can play in at the same time hoping you'll spend $30 a year to avoid getting your games sniped.

There are a bunch of people that do nothing but lurk that site all day looking to beat up on new accounts to raise their rank. There are people that have devoted the last 20 years of their life trying to reach the top of the leaderboards just for forum cred.

>>9995
>It's a shame this website is so janky
When I played 10+ years ago it wasn't nearly as bad. Before this web 2.0 facelift it got sometime between 2012 and now the website was actually decent. It's built on top of phpbb 2.x. The UI for games used to be very nice and far less annoying. It auto-refreshed chat and the map and everything. It just didn't look "modern" back then.

Whoever did the UI update did a really awful job because it's obvious that it's still the same phpbb modification with a terrible template update. Many websites have suffered this fate. It was also only $10 a year or something like that to access the invite-only+private game features back then. There wasn't a "credits" system either. Which I haven't figured out what those are for yet. Maybe you can grind for premium features? Who knows. They're probably just for buying dumb icons to place under your forum name.

Go look at the forums sometime to get an idea about the type of people that have devoted their life to this crap. I would suggest we play anywhere else if I knew of anything better.

We could easily make a map if someone is decent enough with photoshop. Waifu wars could be fun. I could write the XML to power it pretty quickly. Not sure how hard it is to get it accepted into beta testing. I'll read the forum and see how insufferable that process would be.

Since this thing is powered by phpbb I'm really surprised no one has hacked their website and ripped all the code yet. I could see an improved clone of this being pretty popular.

I would probably prefer 6PM EST in that case, since 6PM is already midnight here. At least if we want to do bigger/longer games since last night was kind of already pushing it on how late i could stay up. Otherwise you'll have to wait until i have time the next day.
No particular preference for the map though. Many of those posted already looks fun.
My only suggestion is that if it's a complex or big map, we might want to save that for friday-monday nights, since i'm more likely to be able to stay up later. At least if we want to try doing it in one night.
>>10009
I would also like to remind those of us still in the first two games that it's now our turn (Kissu and StrongestTardics right now) and if we work together to eliminate the 5th rando as quickly as we can, we can finish those two games up too, and clear up spots for future games.

I'm fine with this but I'm going out to eat with family tonight around 5pm EST (about 30 minutes from now). I might not be back until 6:30pm EST or so. Might make it back before.

Don't wait for me if you guys want to go ahead I'll just watch when I get back if I'm too late. Anyone can start a game from the control panel or whatever it's called. They're pretty easy to set-up. Just make sure everyone is ready and be ready to copy/paste the gameid it gives you. I think 6:30PM would be fine today if that works for you, and everyone else.
6PM was just a preferred suggestion. Adjustments are bound to happen because of life stuff anyway, but that's why i prefer trying for earlier first, if it works.
So, if everyone agrees with 6:30PM i think we can start doing a roll call at that time and see if everyone is ready, and take it from there.

Do anyone have a suggestion for today's map? I'd be down for any, but my suggestion is the same as >>10029 (do another one with a pretty simple map and mechanics and leave the more advanced stuff for a later match).

It kind of made it harder to know who was in the lead, but that made for more fun speculations of who you should attack. But yeah, for tonight i vote for trying one without fog-of-war.

I didn't notice until near the end of that game, but to the right of each player's name it tells you the number of regions everyone owns, without the fog obscuring it. Troop counts and regions held are the main thing you can't know for certain, which I think is a fun bit of uncertainty.
Either way though, it was the escalating spoils that ultimately decided the game, not the details of who was where.

Ooh, i see. I noticed the regions count pretty quickly myself, but since i was eliminated first, i didn't really see the full effect of the escalating spoils since the map was just ? for me by then. Basically you just roll dice to attack your neighbors with the defender having an advantage
Every turn you get reinforcement units and if you own a set (which is basically just a geographic region) you gain more reinforcements, pic related shows how many units you get for that area
So the basic idea is to consolidate your borders while frustrating your opponents, and eventually mass such a large army you can just blitz across the map and win/get into an overwhelming advantageous position to help you win later

 No.10112

>>10108
Indeed. But it has the advantage that we can nuke fairies and slimes from orbit

 No.10113

>>10110
Everyone starts off with equal number of troops in random areas. You get a bonus for the number of regions you hold at the start of each turn. The default is 3 but you pass a certain threshold you get more. Then there are bonuses for holding an entire country/region like above: >>10111

So say you held the two at the top left of the map. You'd get 5 extra troops for those then 4 troops for the regions you're holding too. Every turn if you attack someone and take a region from them you get a card. Each card is associated with a region. If you get a set of 3 (same color or three different colors) you can turn them in for a bonus. That bonus starts low at 10 or so but it goes up higher each time someone uses cards. So by the end of the game you might get 60+ troops for turning in a set. You also get another player's cards if they're holding any when you kill them.

So the goal is to hold land to get more troops than everyone else and try to attack at least one place each turn to get a card. Then when you have the chance turn in your cards for a big troop bonus and steam roll your way across the map to kill other players. If they hold cards you get those and can turn them in on the same turn. Eventually, one player makes a break out and can take over everything.

 No.10114

>>10112
would rather nuke little blue-haired mikos

 No.10115

>>10113
Oh and at the start of your turn or when you turn in cards you get to pick where you place your troops. You can put them on any region you hold.

Attacking is just dice rolls. But the number of dice you get depend on how many troops occupy each space. So a 3+ vs. a 3+ has both players rolling 3 dice. But a 3 vs. a 1 means one player gets to roll 3 dice while the only player only gets to roll one. Anything above 3 (e.g. 25 troops) is simply 3 dice being rolled as well.

So far our games have come down to spoils. I've been setting the default. I haven't played with any of the other settings but some of them prevent you from getting massive stacks from turning in cards. We could try them next time if you guys want but it would probably mean a longer game.

There is also a "trench warfare" option that prevents you from attacking from places you didn't have before the start of your turn. There is also a way to limit reinforcements so you can't move armies across the map in one turn. Instead they can only move one region at a time.

 No.10234

>>10233
Trench warfare sounds like it would be tedious in the late-game, if you could only advance one step forwards each turn even if you had a huge advantage. Might be good on the smaller maps to avoid one-turn KOs, but that's not been much of an issue for us.
Limiting movement in the reinforcement phase, I don't see making much difference either way for us. I feel like that could be relevant for countering advanced tricks, but we're not doing enough with our reinforcements for it to matter.
Changing the spoils setting though might be worth a try. Probably on a smallish map with decent region bonuses, so that it is still possible to win in a reasonable time. Something similar to the British Isles one would probably work well.

 No.10235

>>10234
We can also play assassin mode now. I've played it before it's pretty fun.
>In an assassin game each player is assigned a secret target, designated in-game with crosshairs Assassin Target next to the username.
>You win the game if your target is killed - whether it be by you or another player! When a player is auto-kicked in an assassin game, the game continues and whomever had the deadbeat now has to kill the deadbeat's target.

For spoils these are the other options:
>Flat Rate sets are worth 4 for red, 6 for green, 8 for blue and 10 for mixed.
>Nuclear sets are not worth any troops. Instead, each region in the set is nuked to a single neutral troop (even if you own it!). Note that it is possible to eliminate players, including yourself, by cashing nuclear sets! Regions are nuked in the order of the spoils cashed, and any players eliminated accordingly.
>Zombie sets work in a similar way to Nuclear, with each region in the set being zombified to being neutral (but not changed in size).

 No.10788

>>10787
Alright. What about options? I've played with fog last few games so i wouldn't mind no fog this time.
I'm not sure if other games types like Terminator (score for eliminating players) or Assassin (kill your assigned target) would have much use in a small game with 3 players though...
But for the spoils and reinforcement i'm thinking we could try Nuclear (reset troop count down to 1 on card regions) and unlimited reinforcement (sounds fun to try), unless you have any other suggestions.
Also, manual or automatic troop placement? Either works for me.

 No.10789

>>10788
Well Duck and Cover already has the nuclear bombardment gimmick... whether that means it would made more sense or less to also have nuclear cards, I have no idea.
And yeah, I think no fog would be best for that map.
I'd maybe lean in favour of manual troop placement, at least now I understand how it works.
Unlimited reinforcements? I doubt it will make much difference either way on a small map with only three players, since we're unlikely to be holding multiple unconnected regions for long.

 No.10790

>>10789
Oh, you're right. I hadn't even noticed that until now. Well, maybe we can just do the usual spoils in that case, might be a bit much to have nukes from both.
And no fog then.
Yeah i can go for manual too. Since it's just placing reinforcement on already assigned territories it's pretty quick.
No i guess unlimited reinforcements might not do that much, just thought it would make it a little more flexible. But now knowing the nuclear bombardments, maybe we can just do the usual "1-move" since that means you're limited on what troops you could move out of those "risky" regions.

All but ghunc, as far as i can tell (they've only done 3).
And that was a good point, because i looked it up and found this on the "Score & Ranking" tab:
>New Recruits must earn a promotion to join Assassin games, Terminator games, team games, large games (6 or more players), Trench Warfare games and games on complex maps (they will be hidden from Join A Game and Game Finder listings). These restrictions do not apply to private games.
Since i assume neither of us has payed to be able to make private games, it looks like we might need to play two more games with ghunc before with we can play games with the other game types and options with him.

Acother options, if ghunc is here right now, is that he and someone quickly brush over two games to get him up to 5 too.
I up for that option if ghunc can and want to do that. Otherwise, we'll just play a normal game one one of the maps that new recruits can play.
