Combat against mutants is complete ass, all of them have way to much health and all of them have some attack that knocks you down.
The new factions are lame and it feels like character assassination what happened to the old ones. Also they all look too similar, it's really hard to tell them apart in combat.
And the "lore" and story is also ass, they brought all the protagonists from the main faction back but they act totally differently and it really sucks.
Artifacts were also dumbed down, they no longer have downsides other than radiation.
Also guns feel lame, they have a strict tier-system unlike the original games were you could take an AKM to the endgame.

And don't get me wrong, I REALLY wanted to like it. Despite my better judgment I preordered because I liked the originals so much, and when the release was underwhelming I waited half a year to start playing since they fixed and added stuff.

I lost interest in Stalker 2 when I saw it was going to be releasing for consoles at the same time. I don't think I've seen a single game release for both PC and console at the same time that didn't feel like the console version was the priority. That and it using UE4 and the first trailer they released was nothing but slick looking canned animations.

¥Also guns feel lame, they have a strict tier-system unlike the original games were you could take an AKM to the endgame.
It feels like every game is required to do something like this these days. How is this implemented anyway? Is there an upgrade system, or is it like those loot shooters where you just start finding guns that have better specs and you need to switch to them to be competitive later in the game?

I really should get back to playing Call of Chernobyl. Or maybe check if there's been any more cool mods released in the last several years or so.

>Is there an upgrade system
Yeah, but it's like in Clear Sky or Call of Pripyat.
It has like 3 tiers (so for 5,56 the first one would be the 416, then the G36 then the Kharod), and for new enemies they just become nonviable because they inexplicably do less damage despite using the same caliber.
What also really annoys me is that you have a Makarow that you cannot drop from the inventory and that is always used in cut scenes.

I read somewhere that early game Anomaly is a hobo simulator and they were right because I am always strapped for cash. I'm spending a good amount of time just doing side jobs of hunting mutants and selling the meat and hides for a little bit of income.

I remember downloading a big mod pack thing for Stalker but I never played it. Maybe I should get around to it some day since it seems so many people like. It even got that manga/anime based on it which is truly crazy to me.

If you're talking about Urasekai Picnic, it's more based on the original Roadside Picknic.
They pretty symbolically rid themselves of the STALKER influence by having a stalker looking dude just perish early on.

Yeah, that's the one I was talking about.
Hmm interesting. I guess it makes sense since it has Picnic in the name as well, huh? Neat.

Finally, a Stalker thread. I shall use this to post about my favorite mod, Joint Pak 2 (Cumulative Pak).
It is a soup type mod that adds anything and everything, and is known for it's absolutely gruelling and unforgiving difficulty as well as the astronomical amount of content that it adds, such as handmade quests, several dozen maps, and 500+ hour main quest (yes really). Even when compared to other "large" and popular mods, such as, Anomaly, Lost Alpha, other freeroam modpacks, etc, they all absolutely pale in comparison to this one.
The quest design ranges from decent and good enough to be engaging, to well thought out and unique quests that would be hard to emulate in other kinds of games. There are countless different questlines, and at many points they interweave with eachother, meeting at just the right points to make the entire game feel like a coherent and expertly laid out experience. In addition there are 100s of repeatable "cyclic" quests in case you want to grind money or items.
Speaking of items, the best items in the mod are unique ones only granted by doing quests or finding secrets. Unlike many others, you can't just get the best gear in the game by grinding money off of repeatable missions over and over, you have to earn your great gear instead. Joint Pak provides a very smooth feeling of progress, that continues on throughout most of the 500 hour journey that is a single playthrough. Every new weapon, suit of armor, artifact, or some useful gadget will feel like an achievement you earned with your own blood sweat and tears, so even going from a simple double barrel to a pump shotgun will feel amazing.
One of my personal favorite aspects of the mod is the sheer amount of unique music it has. Each and every map has several songs assigned to play during different times of day. The music choice is excellent and fitting in most places, and it perfectly fits the feel of the original Shadow of Chernobyl.
I feel this is one of the greatest videogame experiences anyone can have in their lifetime. Even if you were to play it every day, it would still take several months to finish, let alone 100%. It is extremely immserive due to all of its constituent parts working amazingly when put together, and days will turn into nights and back into days before you even realize it. This mod is capable of sucking me into its world better than anything else.
Now I'd like YOU to try it out! Keep in mind this isn't for the faint of heart and is recommended for Stalker veterans only (call of chernobyl mods do not make you a veteran). No one I have ever recommended this to has beaten it, let alone gotten even 25% deep into it. However, if you are truly determined, you can still give it a go. I'll now post various links below to play it for free.

Joint Pak runs on some 64 bit version of the SoC engine, and it's actually extremely well optimized. The only times I've gotten performance hits are when hundreds of bodies are piling up in the super big fights in late game.

Did the patches improve the optimization? I heard the game was performing like shit even on good hardware when it launched. At this rate I'll probably pick it up sometime next decade when I might be considering an upgrade anyway if there's something cheap comparable to 5090, but still.
