Didn't they have some option to read music CDs to produce random monsters, or was that a different game?

Yeah that's the game with using CDs to generate monsters. The DX version lets you look up the CDs so you don't have to have a physical or even digital copy. And the GBA versions of Monster Rancher use passwords instead of CDs.

So I can use it to beat low rank tournaments easily for cash (it doesn't live long enough to rank up) and let it die to unlock certain monsters.
