Well I think this one will be a mainstay of the season, at least in terms of non-sequels. For the whole duration I was waiting for the twist that'd make it much more modern in terms of storytelling than expected, but it stayed quite traditional-ish throughout. Not in terms of DnD traditional, but it was a self-contained fantasy story. The only real thing that you could consider more modern would be the big monster turning into a human form, but that's been around forever too. Kind of a breath of fresh air to see a story that keeps to its own fantasy world without unnecessary isekai tropes is what I'd say but there do seem to be a couple of them each season. This one just had a good first episode and budget to go with.

Watching this first episode made me think that this is the closest thing to a current day equivalent of Record of Lodoss War. I'd still say that Lodoss remains superior because of the amount of detail, love and beauty poured into it, but this is so far not bad at all. Clevatess needs to retain that quality all the way through.

This OP is really great, but I'm not so sure how I feel about the English ED... Feels a bit out of place.

In a way I'm reminded of Lodoss, but it's also a bit different with the MC being a more neutral-evil being. While the party in Lodoss were a bunch of straight-shot heroes. The second episode kept a similar tune to the first though, although there was some exposition that probably was a bit more than necessary. The OP character concealing his power is something I'm always up for and Clevatess' insistence on concealing himself until he's solidified his position leads the way to having something along those lines. Although it's somewhat of a constraint by necessity, isn't it? Based on the opening scene in Ep1 there really shouldn't be anything in the human world that can stand up to Clevatess.

I'm too pissed off at the bait and switch to watch it. Someone mentioned that double length episode ones exist to fool people and he was right.
The dragon was cool, him becoming the typical power fantasy teen boy is not.
I guess I'll watch the thread to see if it becomes worth watching to me, but I wanted something else from it.

 No.8387

>>8386
He... didn't really turn into a teen boy did he? The form looked to be based on a woman and he doesn't at all act like a teen boy stand-in. He's acting exactly as he should for a scheming demon-lord.

How else does a giant beast blend in with the humans to raise a human baby...
Just his body is that of the last person he saw holding the baby, his personality is still him.

 No.8395

>>8388
It’s not the same premise because he’s not acting the part of teen boy with superpowers. Cleverness remains a very standout person in society through his behavior and mannerisms. You assumed one thing when you saw him transform and then from there you never let that assumption go even when it wasn’t going the natural route such a progression would take.

The monsters in this show are some of the best these past years. The giantness of the giga-monster at the bottom of the lake gives me the good kind of shivers.

It's really tickling that little fantasy itch I've been having. Clevatess being a devious little fiend helps too. Even though he's got somewhat of a conscious, it's not that evident or much of an impediment towards his goals. The hero being the more strong willed and convicted of the party works out well for me.

Seeing her struggle for this and the last episode has been pretty nice since it shows her limits even as an immortal and the creative ways she overcomes them. The one flaw this anime has so far is that it's making me wait each week for the next ep, since it's got such great cliffhangers that keep you hooked episode after episode. Even if it doesn't end up being the best anime of the season, it'll certainly be one of the ones I enjoyed the most during it.

I have no idea why beyond the bait and switch they're still doing things like reproducing analog photography's camera jitter.

Geh, they're talking country politics. So, Eslinn and Hiden are at war with Boelate; Boelate is the one with the most advanced magic, and Hiden is the country that got destroyed by Clevatess. The Beast Lord of the West's situation was easier to understand than all this isekai country name crap. Mostly just dialogue this episode.
Also, hero conveniently finds a female armor that conveniently fits her perfectly in the desk of the leader of the bandits, how convenient!

That sure doesn't look like armor...
Also with each episode this is feeling more DnD campaign inspired with each episode.

I really love the art in this anime.

I really like the show so far
Impressive how it can manage so much tension when one of the main characters is well, Clevatess
Though jesus the exposition is clunky

I really like the idea that magic is a new discovery that changes society and war, similar to gunpowder and industrial production. I really don't want the main characters to easily overcome the foes and for this to be a central struggle in the story.

Yeah, Clevatess getting trapped in the blood prison was something I was not anticipating at all. My dumb OP isekai brain thought Clevatess was going to jump in and kill or ward-off all the Boelate army.
Every episode of this show has me excited for the next episode to release. Great show.

Unrelated but loved this first shot in the latest episode.

Also I love all the explosion sound effects in this episode, they sound really classic like they came straight from gundam or something

I think I've sorta fallen in love with this more each episode. It's not the best anime ever but it's trying something that defies the norm, if just a bit to try and do a more serious fantasy story. Very reminiscent of earlier anime. Also the heroes are basically overpaid bums.

I'm really liking this show too. Every episode we're left with something to look forward to for the next. The pacing is deliberate; every moment matters. They're never fucking around on pointless/repetitive scenes to end the episode on a cliffhanger, that's just how the story goes.
Very much enjoying this.

Yeah 12 episodes runs are becoming more and more common I think
I hope that when this run is done they immediately move onto production of season 2 and not get stuck in production hell or mess about trying to make a film adaptation

So there used to be another superior species (of humans?) way back when who used to rule over the whole world. The "Hero Legend" is something they created? And the Beast Lords and the humans are just characters in their play about the legend? Does this mean the lords were created by the ancient species for some thing? Or do the lords fear the current humans will reach the potential of the ancient species? But then Drel said it was impossible to reach their potential. The latest episode has left me confused.
Curious to how this ends in the next episode.

 No.10733

helk was 24 episodes and it was also very good

 No.10734

>>10732
I'm guessing the idea is that the ancient humans are like the dungeon masters in this story, they established the legend for their own amusement (or some other reason) and so their power is transcended in that they quite literally control the world's narrative
This does definitely make Drel far more interesting, his goals are a lot more lofty than I thought and possibly agreeable...??

 No.10745

How are they going to wrap this up in just one episode?
It feels like the ending is either going to be rushed and messy or end with sequel bait.

Thought it was good pacing to finally get to see whether the hammer hit the sword or not from a couple episodes ago.
Drel's death was brutal, as always.
I don't quite understand what made Clevatess give up on seeing Luna become king in the first place, and now I don't understand what made him want to witness it again. Something to do with the color of Luna's eyes? Dunno.
Klen letting Luna walk up to his mother was empowering.

>I would like to be the King's magic teacher
I'm guessing second season will mostly be within the walls of the Royal palace, contrary to season one's adventure-esque storyline. Hopefully will be just as good. Can't wait for it.
Hiderat Alicia a cute.

>I'm guessing second season will mostly be within the walls of the Royal palace, contrary to season one's adventure-esque storyline
On one hand that sounds like a great use of Klen's character, but on the other hand that setting would probably lead to story developments coming through revelations rather than character actions, and the show has great characters but clunky exposition
I am very glad a second season has been confirmed regardless
