I read 1 route of the VN (with the meme removal patch) and didn't like it much. I thought it would be a funny sex adventure but instead it feels like 75% of it is just bad action scenes. Every single one is just

It was a cult hit on futaba (maybe 2ch too?) so it was a pretty big deal at the time. I imagine it played a part as to why it's getting an adaptation. I wouldn't dismiss it as memer shit.
